    You definitely want the offshore bracket, you get more room in the back of the boat, the boat rides better and you can stand on it to net fish if you need to.



    I agree with this 100%. If it's a big fish and it won't behave, I just step out and net from the offshore bracket.

    Aluminum Haul Hard Top boats How popular are the aluminum hard top boats on Lake Ontario?  Like a Kingfisher 2525 Offshore

    Seems like they would handle the great lakes very well.  But Ive never seen one in person actually out on the water.  Im looking for a new pilot house boat, and the idea of not dealing with fiberglass or wood transoms /  stringers is very appealing.



    I own a 26' all weld pilot house (www.wooldridgeboats.com) that I bought in 2011. I charter with it on bay of Quinte and Lake O. It's a beautiful boat and I'm very happy with it. I went through a lot of what I'm sure your going through. My website is www.bayofquintecharters.com. There should be build pictures on there and a video or two.     New Navionics webapp integration with mobile device

    Hey guys and gals just a quick post to let you know something cool that was recently released.

     

    Navionics has released integration between the webapp and your mobile app.  

     

    I tested it this morning looking with an auto route from the Picton Harbour inn out to the upper gap on the Bay of Quinte.  If you were staying at the Picton Harbour Inn and wanted to make a route out the upper gap you can just go the http://www.navionics.com and click on the webapp.  Make sure to Login.

    Then click on Route on the bottom and select "auto route"

    Once you have done that you simply have to drop a starting point and an end point.  It will automatically generate your route.  The total time, and fuel consumption is based on your boat settings so you can change that to what you use.  I cruise at about 30 mph and use about 15 gallon per hour at that speed, so that is what I have inputted.  You then need to Save the route so it will show up on your mobile device.

    If you now open your mobile app and select "route" at the bottom you will see "archived routes" select that.

    Here was what opened on my phone.  I chose the route I had just made I could have named it if I wanted to.

    Here is the route once opened.  I can now navigate that route using my mobile device.

    If you have a Raymarine your even one step ahead and your Navionics mobile app will push the route straight to your Chartplotter as soon as you step on the boat and your phone connects to the wifi on your chartplotter.  This is supposed to be coming on Lowrance/Simrad products as well but I don't know how soon. 

     

    Just thought it was a cool development and you guys would enjoy knowing about it.

    New Navionics regional cards

    Navionics has released new Navionics + cards that are regional.  These new cards offer the same data as the Navionics + cards but cover a smaller region and come at a lower price point.  To the boater that is not traveling all over North America there is a savings of $50 and you'll never notice a difference.  Something to consider if you are looking for a new Navionics card for your boat and you don't have an existing card.

    Three ways to catch more walleye

    I usually start around 1.7mph. In the spring our fish are often high. I troll leads of 75-150' back, but in the fall when the fish are deeper I troll them every way possible. Lead ore (5 and 10 colour), dipsy, and rigger. They have caught fish for me everywhere. If original floaters and HJ's catch fish I'm surprised the scatter rap minnow isn't working. But hey fishing is fishing and the one sure thing is nothing is sure. Lol.

    Every body of water is slightly different so it is possibly they don't work well there but I would be surprised.  If body baits in general work then you should have success with the scatter rap minnow.  They really have become one of my favourite body baits. I would guess you are probably running them under or over the fish if you aren't getting bit on them, but again, every body of water is different and there is no be all end all lure.  The colours you use are good colours, I also like to use purples and greens.

    Cisco Rod Holders

    I have all Cisco. Came from berts. In terms of the tube rod holders it's 6 one half dozen the other. Both are great and do the job. I do prefer no rubber cap as I seemed to always lose those. If you have more then 4 holders per side the Cisco are better as they have infinite adjustment doe level so your rods are always staggered. If you have less then 4 rods per side the berts work perfectly fine.

    In terms of dipsy rods the Cisco are awesome. I much prefer the cradle rod holders. You can mix and match as they fit into the same track.

    Sonar Map recommendations please

    Navionics is good, but the 1ft contours are really just interpolation in a lot of areas so the true details are not there. It is probably the best off the shelf product though.

    To get perfect maps you will need to generate your own with a Vexilar Sonar Phone type app. Its actually quite amazing how much difference there is in some areas.

    In some areas your right the 1 ft contours seem extrapolated, however, the vast majority of Lake Ontario is amazing.

    Plus if you aren't happy with the detail it's so incredibly easy to grid the area and upload your logs or use SonarCharts live. I live on a little lake that has had inaccurate charts for as long as I can remember. Last year I finally uploaded some logs from out there and the difference is miraculous. The cool thing is with crowd sourcing anyone who updates their card on the Navionics website has all the detail from my recordings. I know some guys (like tournament anglers) don't like the crowd sourcing but I love that I can get safer more accurate charts so easily.

    best swivel for copper to leader

    I use a swivel between the backing and the copper but not between the copper and the leader.

     

    backing to copper  I use the #8 spro as the #6 although it runs the the guides just fine, it will not run through the gap on the level wind on my reel.  So check that out before you rig it.

     

    Copper to leader.  I use an albright knot http://www.animatedknots.com/albright/index.php?Categ=fishing&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com to 50 lb flourocarbon leader material.

    Trolling worm harnesses?

    I troll harness' all the time too. Best way to run them behind boards is with an offshore tackle tadpole. Look them up. They have an aggressive dive curve and run behind boards with very little pull. They are an absolute staple for me.

    Only the Furuno navnet units take a Navionics card.

    I've heard good things about the new furuno's though. Let me know how you like yours. I had a Furuno 585 with an airmar ss264w and it was the best sonar I've ever seen. I loved it.
