  2. No rest for the wicked... Back on stand for the pm portion of today. Young buck on his feet and cruising for honeys.
It's amazing with scent control and rubber boots, he still manage to find my walking path in. My tracks in bothered him but walking downwind never did. Amazing nose on these animals. If they had the vision of a turkey and the s*x drive of my ex we would probably never kill one.

  3. I've mentioned quite a few times on this forum about "low impact hunting" on my property and really trying to hunt smarter and stay out of my core areas until the weather was right or the rut had started. In fact I hadn't even set foot on 2/3 of my property until yesterday and today when I hunted my honey hole stand in between a core bedding area and my sanctuary. Bucks have typically cruised this corridor in late October/November and the past two days were no different.

Yesterday (11/4) was the top bow hunt I've ever had after seeing 10 different bucks, 35-40 doe, chasing and grunting galore, a button buck trying to mount a small doe and essentially being surrounded by deer from sun up til dusk. It was truly an epic day.

I went back to my same stand today given the favorable south wind  and action I had yesterday and although I had a bit of a late start getting on stand past first light it was still a great day. About 45 minutes in, this nice solid 8 passed me broadside at 20 yards. I hit him a little farther back than I wanted but he just stood there and gently walked away limping a bit as if nothing has happened. Thinking the worst - i.e a gut shot - I backed out. Then it started pouring so I went back to mark the blood trail just a bit and I was astounded at the amount of blood on the forest floor. I trailed it for about 20 yards until I saw him piled up only 40-50 yards from where I shot him. I sliced his liver, somehow missed all bowel and stomach, and destroyed a large vessel which resulted in tremendous arterial bleeding. The blood trail looked as if someone had painted an 18" red line using a paint roller.

The body was huge and nicely rutted up in the neck area. Extremely healthy deer absolutely loaded with fat....my guess is a 3.5 yr old, but maybe only 2.5.....

Congrats to all who have harvested thus far and thanks to everyone who have posted. Be safe in the field

  4. Just a matter of time. Hardly a coyote, nevertheless bobcat in my area as a kid. My father spent his life in the woods and never saw those things until recently. Ny has a decent moose population now as well. I wouldn't doubt in ten years they will be a concern while walking to your stand in the dark.

  5. Nice temp drop Thursday night. Gonna be in a tree Friday evening. Preferably under some oaks. There hammering acorns around here. Apples, oats, peas, clover, and all my cam pics and fresh sign is on oak flats. Typical but makes me wonder why I don't have more stands on oaks.

  6. Well last years hunting season was a great success for me. Unfortunately this year isn’t starting so well. The spot I hunt in Bristol where I took my bow buck last year, we lost our entire food plot. Three weeks back, the farmer north of us had 4 cows get out and they decimated the plot in 2 days. This is a first. Image1536830846.363695.thumb.jpg.a61aa024675ab75beab26b825fdb7799.jpgImage1536830860.988440.thumb.jpg.d549a56fbe8af5b898f93a7ee34b2869.jpg

If it makes you feel better, we planted an acre plot and set stands around a brush field on lease. Owners uncle brush hogged the whole thing last week.

  7. More excited for the 30 chestnut trees we planted to start producing. Be a few years but it's gonna change things big time. Some we bought were already producing nuts, so hopefully good yield in few years.
