When we used to take charters the expectation was never to set or choose the spread. In my eyes it didn't make sense to take part in those activities the experience of the captain in those areas got us on the fish, and gear in the water much faster then we ever could accomplish.

When it came to getting hits and running to the rod hooking a big salmon nothing really compares to the excitement involved with that (as everyone here already knows). Not to mention 4 or 5 buddies laughing and busting balls about a small fish or missing a fish.

I completely understand the captain protecting their investment and now that I own my own boat I know what goes into it.

That being said when we took a charter we wanted to be involved as much as we could be. Some captians allowed more then others but I don't remember a time that we were not accommodated as much as possible.

There were trips in the beginning that guys with us just couldn't get with the program and were rough on the gear. Usually a Bill Dance bass hook set on the wire dipsey rod. We made sure to make up for the lost gear at the end of the trip and those guys quickly were weeded out of the group going on the trips.

Toward the end of our charter days the captians we went with were great about explaining how to set a spread, what to look for on the electronics etc...

On my older boats I always used a marine epoxy putty. Not very pretty but the stuff hardens like steel. Nice thing is you can get it at a lowes or home depot for like $5.
A bunch of different brands any of them should work.

Over the years I have been on many charters,out with friends and now have my own boat. Everyone handled things a little differently. Usually there was not an issue with the rigger rods. The biggest issue I saw with someone that was not experienced with salmon trolling is with the dipsey rods. The rod would get pulled, reeled down and then slammed home like we were out bass fishing. Good bye salmon, good bye flasher, fly, and dipsey. Like most guys said just ask. Like yourself we always wanted to do the work and as each day went on and the captain got comfortable with us as a group the amount of things we did increased.

I am someone that has a longer drive and a limited amount of time that I can commit to trolling Lake O. The one piece of equipment I would wish for would be an entry level speed probe. I dont really care about the depth or temperature I believe I can find fish regardless of that information but the speed is much harder to dial in without the probe. The $500 to $700 entry point is a tough pill to swallow. I know I can find used from $200 to $300 but then am I a few hundred in and just buying someone else's issues. I would rather buy tackle. Just a thought.

Pap I was at Cabelas in Hamburg Pa and the Depthmaster combos are all gone. The guy at the store told me he wasn't sure if they would come back with a new design or if they would be replaced with a bass pro item. Sad to see.

Sarge I've never run cowbells before so I'm not completely sure of the actual size of them from the picture they look like 3-4" from my guess. Barlow's Tackle is a company I have ordered bass stuff from. I looked the had a economy hammered willow blade size 8 (3.75" long) 10 blades for $13. Again I have no idea if these would work or not but price seemed ok. Good luck with the DIY.

Adk as a fellow weekend guy I agree it is a big pill to swallow. I haven't made the leap to order one of the systems yet I'm still trying to get all the other basics in order first. For a type of fishing I only get to do a few times a year if I'm lucky I sure spend a lot of time thinking about it. Maybe it's a good thing I live a few hours away.

I guess what I was asking is when someone says they are using a stud fly are they really just referring to a variation of a hammer fly like in the first picture? Or do they mean a completely different color fly? The last 3 pictures are all stud flies with slight variations but all 3 are very similar to each other unlike the fly in the first picture. Not really a big deal I am going to order both I'm just trying to wrap my head around what people mean.

Had a question. A bunch of people mentioned a stud fly but when I looked on the attomik site to grab a few the listing got me a little turned around about what fly people were talking about. There is one hammer live lime fly that is also labeled with (stud fly) next to it. There are a few other flies labeled as being some variation of a stud fly I attached pictures as examples. I am guessing that it would be one of the flies that are similar to each other. The one fly being labeled as a stud fly but looking so different from the others threw me off. Can someone let me know which one is actually a stud fly?

I found some xlarge straws (1/2" diameter) on Amazon got 100 for like $7. They are called boba straws if you wanted to look them up. Each one is 8" so I just cut them in half and get storage for 2 flies from each straw. There were some cheaper ones but I like because they are clear and i can see what fly is in it.

I know there might not be a ton of people that use braid but I wanted to pass on this deal I got. Picked up 2 spools of 40 lb seaguar kanzen braid 500 yards each for $15. I found these at a field and stream store near me but the deal is online at Dick's as well.

Got my first order of material from Purple Taco today. Great experience dealing with the people there and the product is top quality.

I had some medical issues come up about a month ago that will lay me up until October or November. I have been looking for something to keep me distracted while on the couch and I think lure making is going to fit the bill nicely.

Made 2 so far and think they turned out well for the first try. One green glow ghost and one blue with yellow mirage. Guess I'll have to think of some crazy names for the combinations I come up with. Cant wait to get back out on the water and catch a few on the new lures I've made.

Does anyone still use the band buster releases? I used these years ago on a friends boat and had good success. I have looked at the other options like rhomers, blacks, and pinch pads. What is drawing me toward the band busters is that I have many friends that have zero trolling experience and I like the simplicity of this release.

Ted here are a few pictures I found that seem to match what you are looking for. I believe the Marker is just a laminated card you hold near the cable to judge the angle. Hope this helps.
