This topic is a little broad. I could talk at length about both. Do you have a specific application in mind? Copper, down rigger, diver? Are you asking about Tekota or Tekota-A? Line counter or no?
Tekota comes in a 700 and 800 size which would be the only ones appropriate for say a 300 or 400 copper, respectively. Tekota has Teflon drags. Tekota-A and Saltist have carbon fiber drags. Saltists have had some inconsistent manufacturing issues with the clickers the past couple years. Brand new reels that don’t sound the way they should or the click pawl pops out of the click spring after very little use. Brian also mentioned the line counter placement that many complain about. He also mentioned the drag adjustability. This can be attributed to the spring washer design difference between the two. Though I would argue that you wouldn’t notice a difference between the two with a properly tuned Tekota with upgraded carbon fiber drags. You also can’t buy a brand new Tekota in sizes smaller than the 700 through the normal channels anymore. Those sizes have been replaced with the Tekota-A.
I own both. I’ve worked on hundreds of each. Both are what I would consider top of the line reels for Lake Ontario trolling. I can’t wait to tear apart a new Saltist once I get my hands on one.
Let me know what questions you have. Be happy to talk you.

Here’s a Saltist 40LC that I have torn apart on the bench right now. I can look for one of my Tekota pictures if you’re interested in the comparison.

Would you take $100 for just the Cisco mounts?
Waiting for Oguck to get back to me. He was interested in the whole lot.

If there are 3 spring washers, reorient then from all alternating to only 2 alternating.
From )() to (()
There are more details on the relevant post on my Rochester Reel Repair Facebook page.
This applies to most of the CW203, 303, and 453. The 553 only has two spring washers.

Make sure you clean the thick, sticky factory grease from the entire drag stack including the main drive gear and relube everything with Cal’s drag grease and also reorient the spring washers otherwise you won’t be happy even with the new drag washers. Let me know if you have questions.

Just had some cv30s serviced and drags upgraded. The factory drags were indeed carbon drags. Was informed that the biggest issue with these reels is the lack of a quality drag grease such as Cals not the drag washers themselves.FWIW. like night and day difference !
This is one contributing factor. See the post on the Rochester Reel Repair Facebook page from last Feb for the full description. The spring washer orientation is a bigger contributor in my opinion.

Thanks Charlie, and everyone else for that matter... Reels showed up today and thought I'd try a few tests to see how they respond. I chose them for the price point, but while researching them I did come across a few older posts that mentioned a couple issues. Thought I'd reach out and see if the problem had been corrected by Okuma or not.
The issue has not been corrected. To see if you have an issue do this... Spool up with some line. Attach end of line to something fixed. I use the handle of the vice on my work bench. Pull out line. Tighten down on the drag with the star while pulling out until there’s a fair amount of tension. Continue pulling out line while now loosening the drag without touching the handle. Most Coldwaters will still now have the same drag tension as you loosen. If you have the issue you will notice very little adjustment to the tension while loosening. Now give the handle a quarter turn and the drag will completely free up. Come back to me for the 90% correction if your reels exhibit the issue.

whats yours, so you tell me how this project should have been done. What is your opinion, this only ruin my fishing season because I leave my boat there for every season and I am 3 hours away.
If you’re 3 hours away, there’s likely another port of similar distance away. Why not keep your boat somewhere else for now?

Can anyone tell me what the spoon is in the lower right corner of the third picture? Cool idea by the way to help out newcomers and pass along some generosity.

That’s not the problem. They already have carbon fiber drag washers. It is a common problem with just about all Coldwaters. Read Rochester Reel Repair Facebook post from February 11, 2020. Just search for them on Facebook.
