Slow day. Picked up three browns in 90 this morning and dropped a screamer on a dipsy out 250. Had lines in at 730 and pulled at 10 to drop my wife off for an appointment. Went back out at 11 and fished solo till 130. Picked up a mid teens King and a mid teens laker.
90 to 110 held fish and bait but I peaked out to 200 with a completely blank screen.

wondering if u target kings and pick up the browns along the way or do you run a brown specific set up? if the latter i would appreciate hearing what tweaks you make. thanks and nice fish!!

  2. Temperature breaks were funky tonight! Started at 65 over 130 fow. Temp. was 55+ but stayed with the marks-plenty of them. Did 3 kings (3 includes the banana sized one).  Trolled in to 110 and found the cooler water (49) at 85 feet, nothing on the screen with one pass. Fumbled the lamprey on the one yard line by the way. On an unrelated note thanks for the lead on good wind and wave apps. A mix of Windfinder and Buoyweather are proving helpful for me and my smaller boat.

I fished out of Braddock Bay Thursday (7/7) morning from about 730-11am.  Fished 80-200 ft of water.  Marked lots of bait and lots of fish and had a couple of releases but nothing in the boat.  But the reason for this posting is that I never so the spiny fleas so bad.   When pulling in my lines they were covered with spiny fleas and sometimes had 3-4 feet of fleas piled up on the line.  Never seen it this bad.  I am sure that is why I never hooked up on any fish even though the graph indicated that there were plenty of fish there.  Wonder if anyone who fished that morning off of Braddock Bay experienced similar issues with the flea buildup on their lines.   The only line that never had buildup was the lead core line I was running.   I run fluorocarbon leaders on my lines and the fleas would seem to buildup/stop at the junction of the fluorocarbon and monofilament knot.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent/minimize the spiny flea buildup?  Will the northeast winds this coming weekend and 3-5 ft waves reduce the fleas?  Looking for any advice. Thanks. - Mr Kato

I fish Braddocks regularly and agree they are a bigger issue. I am not getting any buildup from my flasher and dipsy to my lure though. Like one poster said cleaning up during regular lure checks is the added inconvenience. I have not considered that they may contribute to a lower catch rate though. It is very satisfying to strip them off the wire though. I broke my own record and collected at least four feet of them above one dipsy. Be sure to flick them off the boat otherwise they attract those darn biting flies.

  4. I have a wicked ridge ten point Invader. I loved the thing until last year when (unknowingly) I didnt "cock" it correctly. I initially thought something was wrong but it didnt seem to look different so i went on about my business. At the end of my hunt i took the safety off and it shot the bolt without me pulling the trigger which scared the #$%^ out of me. I would recommend getting a crossbow that you cock with a lever. Regardless of the fact that it was operator error, i feel as though there should be safety mechanisms in place with this model that would prevent what happened to me from happening to anyone else.

Interesting as we went with Wicked Ridge too and it has an anti-dry fire mechanism that can fool you into thinking you are fully cocked.

  5. You'll have a hard time finding what your asking for. Bit the bullet and join a club. You may be surprised what other interests you'll gain.

Brooks is probably our best bet if we go with a club. Thanks.

  6. I don't know much information on it, but I believe there is some private pheasant hunting club with a range (up to 600 or 1k yards I believe).  I think you need to make an appointment and pay, but from what I remember it was cheap, like $10/hr.  Pheasants on the flats.  Give em a call for more info.

  7. There is On Target  Firearms on Basket Rd in Webster, or The Firing Pin in Bergen. Check their websites for info. for inexperienced shooters. Does he have any time under his belt or brand new to firearms? Will make a difference in what they will offer.

Thanks! He is experienced with all implements via scouts etc. I have stayed busy searching for good options. Just not a ton out there that beats me driving the 75 minutes to our hunting spot to set up a target.

  8. No takers on this post. Nonetheless I thought I would share that lightweight ruled our decision making. Went with Wicked Ridge Invader X4. About $400 Bass Pro.

  9. Any good walk up options at a nearby shooting range? I am in Fairport but hunt in the Southern Tier. My son will start his hunting journey this year so I want to be sure he is ready. Not sure we are good candidates for a membership as we just need to dial in before each hunting season.

  10. Coaxed my 11 yo onto the boat with a promise to start our trip with the bass bite. By 6pm we motored west out of the bay and trolled from 160-125’. Changed our spoon program twice before we settled at 80’ over 125’ where bait was unusually deep. Had a ball coaching my first mate on the finer points of landing a major. Learned a good lesson myself which was to use neutral to close the deal. IMG_5907.JPGIMG_5950.JPGIMG_5980.JPG

  11. Not sure if it matters but weeds are thick as snot at launch (I mean thick!!) making it tough to get good bunk to boat contact on retrieval. I feel like this is an annual phase given the right conditions. No way to clear things until I launch again so I am going to just cinch my straps when things dry out. Short trip due to wind and waves so I just donated my parking fee and messed with a few program changes. IMG_5829.JPG

  12. A  center pin clip is meant to be used for adding a weight to a line and should not release the line until you squeeze it.. I use a rubber band to fix sliders. Doesn’t damage line when releasing.. Less drag than a clip.

I actually clip off the nub that would lock the line in place. I have read up on fixed slider options and the rubber band style came up. I will give it a go. I usually fish solo and need to find my way to as few steps as possible to set a rig.
