  1. This is a funny rule to me, first and foremost if someone wants to cheat they will find a way. What this rule does do though is basically knocks me and others out of the Derby. I work a regular job with regular hours so the only time the weigh in would be open is the weekends. So now I have to make the decision that over the next 10 days (checking the weather) this Saturday and Sunday are thunderstorms (so I'm out), the next Saturday and Sunday look a little windy coming from the North West (so I'll have to check back on Friday) however tonight, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday all look really nice, however I'm going to have a hard time if I leave the dock at 6 to make it to Mitchell's by 7. This is really a shame because I was looking forward to using my new boat with a couple of buddies fishing competitively for the first time. So the moral of the story is, I'll be saving $120 and if I really wanted to cheat I would sign up, fish in the evening, keep the fish alive until morning and weight in on the way to work...

I understand what you are saying and I also understand the struggle of having a job with regular business hours, it would be tough to compete on days you don't have off. I would encourage you to keep an eye on the weather and hopefully you can come out on the weekend! We organize three derbies each year so we do our best to have a number of dates that people can plan around work schedules and hopefully participate in, if they are interested. We try to publish the events dates as early as possible and have actually already selected the 2017 dates: May 5th-14th, June 30th-July 30th and August 18th-September 4th. I hope that helps you a little!

I know that those who really want to cheat will probably attempt it, but our job as the organizers is to make it as hard as possible for them to succeed. That is why we have rules and regulations. It is why we require at least one registered witness. It is why we take statements and give polygraphs when necessary. 99.9% of participants are doing the right things, playing fair and having fun. We want to protect those people because they deserve an even playing field and those are the people we want competing. We hate to disqualify participants for breaking the rules (knowingly or unknowingly) but we do it every derby in order to keep things as fair as possible. I know not everyone will agree with every rule we have, but Dave has been working on derbies and tournaments for decades and has seen what works and what doesn't work and has a great sense of what is required to keep things fair and running smoothly.

I hope your schedule will allow you to participate this year and congratulations on your new boat...that is always exciting!

  2. Yes, as long as you are registered for the derby prior to catching the fish at 2am. It protects the integrity of the derby and everyone that has registered prior to fishing.

If we did not require same day weigh ins and registration prior to 7am on the day you want to start fishing, some might attempt to cheat by catching a fish at 8:30pm one night, registering for the derby after the fact, and then submitting a fish they caught while not actually entered into the derby. This protects us and it protects those that have qualifying catches. I am not saying that is what everyone would do, but post-catch entries are an issue some other events have had and we want to avoid that problem.

    So If I understand this.........

I catch a fish at 11PM, and this fish cannot be weighed, because I can't get it to an open weigh station on the day it was caught.

I catch a fish at 2AM, and I can weigh it once the stations open......

    ???

  3. Here is a link to the official rules and regulations: http://loc.org/RULES_AND_REGULATIONS.html Number 10 addresses weigh station hours of operation for the Fall Derby.

The fish must be entered and weighed on the day it was caught (Rule #1!). It requires planning on the part of our participants to make sure you give yourself time to get in to a participating weigh station to ensure a qualifying weigh in. Here is the list of participating weigh stations: http://loc.org/Weigh_In_Stations.html.

This is also a good opportunity to remind participants of a couple things.....everyone needs to be fishing with at least one other person who is also registered for LOC. If you are on a boat, everyone on the boat must be registered. This promotes safe fishing practices and results in at least one witness for verification purposes.

And please, don't eat your fish if you place... (Rules 11, 16 & 17)! Hang on to it.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

  4. Good luck to All in the LOC Derby, hoping after all the rocking and rolling the last few weekends it will stableize and some decent numbers will begin to show up between the Pond and the River. Be Safe.

 Have fun, be safe, win BIG!

  6. Hi Gill-T

We actually do not have a youth division. We have a discounted registration price for 10-16 year olds but they are all eligible to win the same prizes as adults who have registered. We do discounted pricing for the kids ($10 day pass, $20 for each derby and $45 for the full season) because we want to make it a true family friendly event. We have a youth award (not a division) and you can see those youth listed on the posted leaderboard on page 5 http://loc.org/uploads/16summer_ldb.pdf. Seeing as youth are eligible for all posted, regular prizes, it is actually kind of a nice little bonus to have the trophy and cash awarded to them. You can see the public, published rules and regulations here: http://loc.org/RULES_AND_REGULATIONS.html and you can find the published, guaranteed payouts here: http://loc.org/PRIZES.html

I hope that clears up the confusion. Thanks!

    Sarah

Sarah I was shocked to learn my buddy's son who won the summer youth division was awarded a trophy and $50. Seems a little weak on reimbursement!!

  7. I just wanted to say congratulations to all of the Summer derby winners! Thank you to all who came out last night to the award ceremony to celebrate. It was an awesome event, a great summer derby and we are already looking forward to the fall! You can find the final leaderboard at http://loc.org/uploads/16summer_ldb.pdf and registration information for the fall derby at http://shop.loc.org/.

As always, feel free to email, call, visit our facebook page, or message me here with any questions.

    Have a great week!

    Sarah

  8. Yes, just to confirm the speculation....not all aboard were registered. It is always tough to disqualify participants. No one likes to hear they are out of the running for such a big cash prize and we REALLY hate this part of the job. We don't ever want to DQ anyone but being consistent with the rules & regs means we keep things fair for everyone. Good reminder to read over everything at http://loc.org/RULES_AND_REGULATIONS.html

  9. Happy Friday!

As we near the end of the Summer Derby I wanted to post a link to the leaderboard for anyone interested in following the action here in the homestretch.

When I was a little girl I used to have a t-shirt my dad had given me with the saying "A bad day fishing is better than a good day working" and, quite honestly, I really didn't have a clue how true those words were! Now that I am an adult I truly appreciate the sentiment. Even if you didn't catch a winner, I hope that many of you got to take some time to enjoy this warm summer weather on the water with friends and family. We have seen some impressive fish on the board and the last few days are always exciting. Stay tuned for the big winner and have fun out there!

  10. Sarah welcome to Lake Ontario United form. I have loved fishing the ESLO & LOC derbies for many years( as my current profile picture shows the 1980s ESLO Weigh Station with Chad Lapa). This is a great interaction of questions and answers you are providing. Any chance you can put a link back to the Lake Ontario United website on your current LOC DERBY website. This way many more people will have a chance to ask questions and see answers from other questions asked already . Thanks in advanceattachicon.gifImageUploadedByLake Ontario United1467476397.448012.jpg I have known your dad for a long long time.... He never mentioned any kids !!!!!!!!

Hi RR, Yeah as I told Blue Eye we will take a look and get your link up probably tonight or tomorrow. The past two days have been busy; I am moving and my in laws are here visiting so I am dedicating a lot of time to actively avoiding them and drinking a lot of wine (JK Cindy!) in addition to derby work. We will be redesigning our website after this season so I am sure we will have a better way to fit the additional info on there in the future. Thanks so much for your patience....

And I appreciate the zinger about my dad...obviously he is super proud.

  11. I am excited to announce that the LOC has joined this year's Salmon Slam and will be sponsoring the Veterans that are fishing this year's single day tournament.  This means that all boats registered for the LOC (everyone aboard other than the Veteran is registered as well) will still be qualified for the summer LOC!

For any boats in the Salmon Slam that aren't in the summer LOC yet, here's a good reason to join!

    Visit http://www.loc.org to join!

We are excited to be a part of it! My dad is a veteran so he is thrilled to be able to help in this way.  I always enjoyed this pic of him during his years in the service...so young and rockin' that awesome 'stache!  I am sure he will be thrilled with me for sharing...that's the price you pay when working with family!  :)
