  1. I'm using 9' MH Daiwa Wilderness rods with twilli tips... works great. $20 rods. I'm using 7 strand wire, I dont know if you need a twilli tip for 19 strand wire?
  2. It has 4 AA batteries in it, I would say close to 1lb. Fish Hawk says it's shaped so it shouldn't add any resistance to downriggers, but I'm sure it has to add something. Maybe not noticeable with most guys running 10lb+ weights but with a 4lb weight?
  3. Most of the stuff you buy in the tackle shop are already brined, I think its got something to do with the VHS and the DEC regulations. Even the whole stuff is usually brined, if you can find it. Nobody seems to have whole green label herring... found some whole red label alewives at All Seasons but I prefer the herring.
  4. Looking to get a weighted steel setup, I’m looking at 200ft weighted steel 4-500ft of 19 strand wire and some amount of braid backing. My question is what size reel do I need do I need to fit all this? I have a convector 55 is that overkill for this?
  5. There's another thread on this in general discussion right now, wave forecast is calling for 1ft or less from Sodus to mexico and 2ft or less from Mexico to St Lawrance... take that with a grain of salt but that's what they say.
  6. Couple Saturdays ago, flat calm morning, forecast for 5-6mph W winds. Mid morning wind picked up out of no where 10-15mph, 3footers in a matter of minutes. I raced out at 30+mph was doing 6mph getting beat up on the way back in. Got half way back in, wind stopped and lake went to light chop, so we threw lines in and started fishing again... never seen anything like that before.
  7. Where are you heading out of? Wave forecast for mexico/oswego says 1ft or less.
  8. Awesome that's what I wanted to know, gonna order a set and give them a try Thanks!
  9. South east wind as bad for fishing as a straight east wind?
  10. Yeah that's odd... weather channel calling for 10+ knot wind all day starting at 7am but wave forecast says 1ft or less?
  11. That's kind of what I was thinking you would have to do to use it without a downrigger. Now you basically are using a fishing rod as a downrigger of sorts without the advantages of actually having a downrigger. Definitely seems like it was designed more with the portability aspect in mind than a performance improvement or existing upgrade. Imagine the blowback on that 1lb ball at 100ft down trolling at 2.5mph lol
  12. They are still out there but no where near as bad as they were a couple weeks ago. Went from checking/cleaning rods every 10-15 mins to once maybe twice and hour now.
  13. I have a Okuma Coldwater 303 linecounter reel I would like to trade for a larger 55 size reel. I can add cash if need be, let me know what you have.
  14. Yeah I did a quick search and read about them but I couldn't seem to find any info on ppl using them on the larger boards. Like I said with the added pull of them big boards + copper line I just wanted to know if the releases can handle it. I really don't want them tripping and swinging in over all my other lines, I see terrible tangles in my future.
  15. Anybody use these on inline planer boards? I have a pair of Offshore SST Mag boards and had a big salmon sink one and keep going. I let up on the drag trying to get the board to resurface but unfortunately the copper line broke and I lost 300ft of copper, a big paddle and meat rig... about $60 in gear gone. I was thinking these releases might help remove the weight/pull of the board when fighting fish. My biggest concern is if the tension can be adjusted enough so the release won't pop under tension from 300ft+ of copper + a big board + waves, but still go once a fish hits.
  16. I saw this a couple weeks ago and was a little confused by it myself. Ok no need for mounting a transducer on the boat, yeah that's nice and less wiring to run but I have transom boards on both sides of my boat so mounting a ducer isn't really a big deal. Use without downriggers? It looks like the same X4/D probe which is far from small and not something you're gonna run on a rod that you will be fishing with. How do you get it down to the depths you want at our trolling speeds and keep it there? Maybe I don't completely understand it yet, but it seems to me it was designed for smaller boats or to be a more "portable" unit.
  17. I might have to switch back to MC rockets, I went through 10 baits Saturday and that's me just running 6 lines. I'm sure you guys on bigger boats running more lines easily use that much if not more in a day. Any place I can save a few bucks makes a difference, especially when it's already a 3hr round trip just to get to the lake.
  18. I was just north of the plant yesterday and fleas were 10x better than they were last week. They are still out there but no where near as bad as they have been, deeper we went the less fleas we dealt with.
  19. Im looking into getting a real case (36 trays) of whole green label herring. Trays of 12 whole herring in the $8 range is something I can manage.
  20. Stopped at fat Nancy’s today to pick up some cut bait... wow! $13 a tray! And when I say tray I mean 6 strips! Not 6 fish... 6 strips aka 3 fish! Been a while since I bought meat but I don’t remember paying $4 per fish!
  21. While I do agree that wire setups really benefit from a higher end reel. I have to say when I first started I ran Okuma Magdas with Tuna Tom CF drags for 2yrs as my wire reels and they never gave me a problem and landed a good number of fish ($50 reel + $8 drags). I now run Okuma Coldwaters for my wire reels ($90-$100), if $200 reels aren't in your budget you can still have very usable setups running some lower end reels imo.
  22. This is the chart I use... 1,2,3 = Dipsey Setting, W=Wire, B=Braid, M=Magnum Size, D=Dipsey Size 1
  23. My biggest issue when I did mine last spring was finding a place to do it. I ended up taking everything I needed with me to a boat launch, launching the boat and replacing the bunks in the parking lot! I only have 2 bunks and took a good hour to do each one.
  24. I'm assuming your bunks are carpeted and you're measuring them with the carpet still on them. Most likely they are a standard 2x6x10. Pressure treated is fine, depending on the condition of the carpet you can remove it from the old ones and re-use it (just stapled on). You are prolly going to want new hardware though, go with stainless steel and you should be good.
