  1. Definately something you want to get to the bottom of. If you have access to a multi meter test the bilge with water in it and go from there. Some videos on the Web on how to do it. In the mean time make sure your batteries are disconnected either thru a perko switch(off) or just disconnect terminals anytime you aren't using the boat. Good luck. Keep us posted.

  2. This is a sore subject for me as well. And  I'm mainly a musky and pike guy. See it every year. Wonder if or why a DEC officer can't do a ride along with the C.G.  They have a strong presence on the river especially around A bay. This way they can be "observed"  first. Over the last 8 years I've only seen DEC boat on the River twice.

I'd guess you were dealing with a school of longnose gar.  The small taps sounds like what u feel when they attack a bait with those hard narrow mouths and they are almost impossible to get hooks into.  Had this exact same scenario happen on lake amistad in Tx a few years back.  Had a giant school of big longnose gar attacking deep diving cranks and got hooks into about 1 of every 20 bites.  They are known for biting the line and cutting it above the bait with those needle teeth.  The one that didn't float back up probably got tangled/wrapped in the fishes mouth.  If you were dealing with a pike I doubt your strike would be described as a light tap but more of a violent slam followed by dissapointment as the fish stole ur bait.

    My thoughts exactly!

  4. As informative as this topic has become it is a little "off topic".

This 40 1/8" fish has become a bit of a martyr. If it was truly going to die (gill hooked) isn't it better to become a family memory than bird and turtle food?

From seeing Justin's posts over the last few years I think he would have CPR that fish under better circumstances.

  5. A few gobies can decimate a smallmouths nest in the 2 mins. it's gone. Multiply that by a few anglers over the days and that's more damage than you fit in a live well down the line. Inside the bays doesn't bother me as much but on the river there are gobies. Fact.

That's why the SLR is closed season until 3rd. Saturday in june for bass and musky.

  6. Guides aren't the ones I see fishing bass beds the first couple weeks of June.

I think D.E.C should have a little more presence on the river. At least that time of year. If you've ever gone to Rossie to see the walleye spawn you'll know what I mean.
