I was out yesterday evening. 5pm-8pm. Went 1/1. “Cut plug” Jplug. 14 down over 25ft. Most recreational boats I’ve ever seen on a weeknight in Late September. Slightly more than usual fishing boats too. That’s just the year it is tho.

Yup the sailboats were out in force Wed night...I stayed out of the river until they went in.  I also got 1 on a j plug. right at the mouth...

I'd say the captain has a duty to assess whether the situation is an emergency or not. You will not be able to fully assess any situation if your 500 ft from a boat and can't hear what the captain of the distressed vehicle is saying.  What if they have been stranded for hours, and without water, with children onboard?  What if they have no way to contact anyone? You may say, yes, they were unprepared ... but that don't meant too much, if it means people turn up dead ... it all just becomes a tragedy, and for the guy that looked away ... well he/she is responsible in part for that tragedy. God forbid if weather turns ugly all of a sudden 2 hours after you left them stranded!

I'm not crapping on you, I get what you are saying ... but I think the other guy seemed to not even be interested in helping at all, or diagnosing the issue ... he just didn't want to waste 30 minutes of fishing, by the sounds of it.  Not good!  I would have taken a photo and posted it up for people to see who the douche bag is.

In the least, lines should be pulled up, vessel should be safely approached, plan of action should be agreed on, and if the functional vehicle is not able to safely tow ... fine, but at least establish comms with tow, ensure coordinates are available, and technically stay with boat until help has arrived.

Yes, exactly what you said here!  At least pull up alongside and see how you can help.  You may just be asked to make a call for them, or jump a dead battery, give them some gas etc.  Or their boat is sinking and you need to get everyone off ASAP...I try not to be judgmental on what mistakes they may have made, and instead try to give some friendly advice on how to be more prepared (IE 2nd battery, extra gas can, emergency flares, etc) I've towed a couple of boats in the last few years, I know someday the people I helped will remember when they needed help and pay it forward to help someone else.

  3. Wow that was pretty crappy of that fisherman.  In my opinion you always should try to help out a fellow boater when they are having issues.  I agree with Fat Trout though, you should not put yourself or anyone on your boat in danger in order to help...Could end badly for everyone.  I would stay with that boat, and try to call someone else like the Coast Guard, Sheriff or Tow Boat if it wasn't safe for me to tow the disabled boat.  But to just pass on by is wrong.

  4. I have a small (17') boat but I still try to start out with 2 wireline dipseys per side in the summer.  I don't have the high end Okuma reels, I am using Magda Pro 30's with good drags and they seem to work well.  The inner dipseys set to 1 and the outer set to 3.  Then I run 2 rods off the 2 downriggers.  These I did upgrade to Penn GT320's with lever drag, 30lb mono with 20lb fluoro leaders.  If its rough or we need to make tight turns, I pull the second set of dipseys and run 10 color lead off a planer board on one side, and a mono line with a michigan stinger dive bomb off the other

I havent gotten into copper yet, still learning from a friend of mine...

  5. We have stayed at South Shore before, nice as it's right on the lake (but no lake access) but it can be windy...

This year we stayed in a little 2 BR cottage right behind the convenience store in Sodus Point.  More expensive, but very convenient to the launch, store, etc...

  6. 1984 Johnson Sailmaster 8HP 2 stroke XL (25") shaft with charging circuit.  I rebuilt the carb 2 years ago (float needle, spring and needle seat, new float and gaskets, and cleaned thoroughly)  and also replaced the impeller at that time.  Lower unit lube changed this spring, ran it about 2 months of this season.  Only selling because I upgraded to a 4 stroke kicker.  Not the prettiest, but it has been very reliable.  $375/BO.  I live in Webster NY, PM me here or text 585_635_9029.  Mike773968407_8hp4.thumb.jpg.bf251eb37cbbce812344344ecef8195a.jpg549581107_8hp5.thumb.jpg.5f9a5203c04108899764e2e75f81baf9.jpg1958217448_8hp1.thumb.jpg.595098c95abf61b37aefba4cdfd100d4.jpg1956290921_8hp2.thumb.jpg.ee3399729808e35acb43a2152dd1e683.jpg81009578_8hp3.thumb.jpg.525e8cc3c8c3705d49870cca9af63e2a.jpg

  7. Headed west again from Russell Station this morning, picked up this nice steelhead 5 minutes in on a wonder bread spoon from the rigger down 60 in 140 FOW.  Ten minutes later got this decent king on a wire dipsey down 75 ft (silver & blue spin doctor and a black fly)  then quiet for a while, but ended up with another king on a black and green glow spoon and another steelhead on a green flasher fly...So 4 for 5 and off the water by noon...fleas not quite  mature yet so still coming off the lines pretty easy.

Also was 1st shakedown run of my new to me 6HP Tohatsu 4 stroke kicker...Everybody says the vibration would be bad because it only has 1 cylinder, but when its separated from the boat by a kicker motor bracket, CMC power tilt and some EPDM rubber pieces, you cant even tell its there...

IMO best bet out of Ibay would be to run west instead of deep. On a calm day 15- 20 min run to the west will get you in to a consistent salmon bite this time of year in <150 fow. Come August you can’t beat the offshore waters NE out of Ibay. The past two years were the only years I can remember having a steady salmon bite directly out of Ibay before August. This year, we are back to normal. We fished all the way down by Watoma Shoals today and it was a 30 min run to the mouth of Ibay from there. Worth it IMO.

You are right on...From Russell Station heading west we picked up 2 kings today...Didn't boat either of them but that's another story...had a few times where the screen looked good, suspended fish 75-90 over 150-160 FOW.

  9. Nice morning on a flat lake, started out in 140 FOW heading northwest from Russell Station.  Picked up a laker on a green flasher fly dipsey, then lost 2 kings in a row (1 right at the boat due to my poor net skills...) 1 king hit on a black and green NK28, the other hit on a black spin doctor fly combo on the other dipsey.  Got another laker on the green fly dipsey again, down 70 feet.  So 2 for 4 but losing those 2 kings hurts...

Went out for a couple hours tonight out of IBay North to 160’ and held North heading. Hit one nice king in 220’ on rigger down 35’ and lost a shaker king at 230’ on a 3 color down the shoot. Spoons. Went to 280’ and turned around and trolled back to 200’ and called it a night. Good luck

The Bert’s rod holder is reversible- one side allows it to ratchet and the other you have to unlock to pull up.  You pull the c clip to pull pin and the lock mechanism then flip the rod holder around.  The teeth on the bottom are configured differently to allow for this.  Designed that way.

Thanks, had no idea!  I will check that out too!
