I dropped my 24’ Trophy in last weekend and the 2 weekends prior launched my 19’ Lund there. No issues.
Keep trim up a bit from ramp to channel exit and you’ll be fine.

Really nice morning to be out on the water. Started on the East side working shallow with flatlines. A few boats around but no fish so decided to go to the West side. Dropped the rigger deep and set a dipsey for the troll across and Bam, Bam a double of lake trout. Back to work with the big board in shallow but once again, no takers, and this time couldn't blame the boat traffic as just one kayak in the area. Sun was getting higher and what chop was on the water earlier was fading so slid out deeper. An hour later still nothing. Decided to cross over again and out in the middle another laker nailed the dipsey fly. So stayed out over 300 fow working back to the launch and kept catching lakers on the dipsey while other rods stayed quiet. It all added up to a relaxing morning and a great dinner of grilled lemon pepper lake trout. Happy Easter everyone.
Great report, I was looking for you out there. Surface water temp dropped and minimal 'colored' water led to a swing and a miss for us on the browns and salmon, targeted the top of the water column in the skinny water with a 9 rod spread. Picked up two chunker lakers, 8 & 9 lbs in 11 fow, full of bait fish, spitting up perch.

Bought 2 new Scotty riggers a few months back. Free shipping, quick. From jersey to me in 2 days. Happy with their service.

When you fish jigs in the shallows like this, how are you retrieving, are you bouncing them off the bottom and reel them in? I've been trying to figure out a technique to cast in skinny water in a kayak, just to take a break from trolling.
Close to bottom as possible, but not on it.

I give credit to those that can catch any fish at all in water thats 33-34 degrees.. I was never any good at it...
I still use small swimming plugs, as we did for decades, but these days it seems guys that troll with streamers catch more fish in very cold water... I have no idea where to even buy good streamers for trolling in the Finger lakes, or what patterns to use.. Maybe someone can enlighten me?... Are these run with a split shot or two to get them down a few feet?.. Are they weighted?.. I have caught fish trolling hair/marbou jigs in the past, but I am sure streamers would be a lot better... no idea how to get started.... bob
Run them with keel sinkers, about 10 ft floro leader 8lb test on Cayuga, 1/4-5/8oz depending on the side of the boat, heavier weight on the outside to get just a bit deeper, lighter on the inside to not get hung up on the bottom in the skinny water. The flies themselves are not weighted. I tie my own. They run anywhere from 2.5-5 ft below the surface. I have run them with no weight in front of them and have caught fish. I use the weight to give myself piece of mind that they stay below the surface. Landlocks absolutely love them, but all trout species will chew on them.
Just like you I remember pulling jigs!!!
Back 20 years ago in my Dad's 12ft aluminum on some cold January-March days, a 12' noodle rod out one side, another one out the back and me holding a 10' noodle out the other jigging it as we trolled with the 7.5 hp Merc. Spinning reels spooled with 4lb test. We would crush the salmon. Good times.
Things have evolved, the streamers are the same concept as the jigs, just a little different approach.

Doc how did the Landlocks fight in that cold water
Strong fish despite the water temp, one of them jumped twice and one other took 4 leaps out of the water.

Best lure out there today!

I’ve stopped by the launch a few times to check it out this year. It seems the bubbler was not working as well as this year, as it it had in past winters.
Any thoughts?

Extended periods of cold, bubbler can’t keep up, imo. Hopefully everyone keeps their motors up so the tubing doesn’t get damaged.

I’ve waded out there many times over the past years wearing chest wader armed with an ice spud to break it up enough so not to harm the transducers. You’re right about the depth Fishstix, probably less than 2 ft, was tight this past weekend launching there. Lake level has no where to go but up. 1st picture shows current level, 2nd picture was 2020’s levels. Usually starts to rise around 2nd week of March, with the snowpack still in the hills south of lake and warm weather this week it might be coming up sooner than later.

Where do you launch this time of year on Cayuga
Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
With the water level low and most marinas iced up launch out of Taughannock.
There is a bubbler system that keeps it from freezing up, for the most part anyway.

That’s awesome......we’re you in different depths or just mainly between 5-25’ below the surface? I was looking to go out next week! Great Catch today!

3-5’ below surface

Went 17/23. 1 laker, 3 browns biggest in picture was probably 9-10, safely released, others were 4&5lb. rest were salmon, which were a nice class of fish 4-5lb average, only a couple that didn’t hit the 18” mark. Skinny water, lines on inside board took 80% of hits.

Quarantine, day 7: Days 1-4 knocked me on my a**, felt a bit better the last couple. My order from Purple Taco came in and Dad’s endless supply of buck tails stocked me up so I banged out a bunch of flasher flies and trolling streamers. It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve been on the water and after seeing Reel Doc’s post I’m ready to get back out there and put the streamers to work.

Recommend to use a snubber on heavier weights with the Cannon 5 st and 10 stx. The start acceleration and stop deceleration is very aggressive which may leave a new 16 lb. weight on the bottom again.

X2. And sometimes the probe goes with it. Uggggg that was an expensive day. Lesson learned.....

Would love if they made it deeper, but that 30 minute ride over to Taughannock to launch is better than not being able to launch at all in the winter. Hopefully the state won’t cut funds to keep the bubbler going. Kudos to the crew at Taughannock park for keeping it going and having that ramp plowed and salted! Thanks!

Thanks to Doc's Intel about the Taughannock launch I was ready to hit the water this morning. Launch was clear but one area halfway to the bridge had a thin ice sheet that easily broke apart. Ornery Southeast wind so turned North and had lines in the water a little after 8. Slow, steady spoon bite and nothing on the dipsey. Wind changed around and came in from the North about the time I was ready to turn around. Decided to break out the long copper down the chute. Barely set it and it fired. The rest of the trip back was nonstop action so easy to stay warm despite the wind getting stronger. At one point was working in a fish on the long copper and the dipsey fired followed by the rigger. Turned out to be a quad as the rigger had fish on the terminal spoon and the cheater. All fish were lake trout today, no sign of the silvers. A great morning to be out for February.
Nice job!

Scratched the itch today and trolled with the MB 1. After boating a few casting a few weeks back we put the big boards in the water today and set a 9 rod spread. Okay day finishing 7/11 but did squeak out the slam, which was pretty cool and a fatty pike, did have a bite off, probably another pike. Salmon were all dinks none being over 16”. Shallow divers, spoons with weight and flies all took hits.

This is the base of mine. #4 Owner or Gamakatsu snelled with 17lb floro to the streamer hook. Atlantics in the winter seem to short hit so they’re caught on the stinger 90% of the time.
