It looks like fishing pressure has backed off some now after there were a few more anglers out this past holiday weekend.  There is still a fair amount of folks at the dam.  Forecast ahead looks seasonably cool with a chance of rain Wednesday and Thursday - a half inch or more of precipitation.  Any significant precipitation would be a good thing to possibly bump up tributary flows and encourage salmon migrations.  For now, the Kings continue a slow roll migration with still most all fish in good shape and only some fish actually spawning.  Over the past weekend anglers did report seeing some Kings moving through fast water areas in the early morning or later evening time frame.  Still no prolonged marching like an all day movement noted.  Majority behavior has been steaming up to or near the dam.  Flows in the Oak are low to moderate and clear.  Any rise in flows and some color to the water would make for better hook-up chances.  The believed scattered Kings out in Lake Ontario are still passing through the River mouth and casters intercepted some of those fish even this past weekend.  Patient skein drifters report seeing a few fish crashing in the lower frog water areas on the Oak and some bobber downs.  The early browns and steelhead and Atlantics reported are not surprisingly mixed up with the majority of the salmon nearer the dam or just downstream.

We’re getting into the good part of October now and still the salmon “run” looks to be behind a typical years’ timing by a week or two.  More fish are definitely on the move now with still no great concentrations staged in the usual downstream spots that we know of.  Look for migrating fish out of Lake Ontario to move up toward the dam relatively quickly.  Weather is mostly pleasant for anglers this week – not necessarily great for anymore precipitation or colder temps.  The forecast is dry and relatively warm until the weekend when there is the chance for precipitation.  Rain last weekend did not amount to much here on the WNY Lake Ontario plain.  Long range forecast points toward colder weather next week and possible lake effect snow.

Welcome to October – well by the calendar anyway.  By the weather and warm temps, it doesn’t feel much like October.  The forecast is for unseasonably warm today and through some of tomorrow and then a cool down.  Chance of rain or showers with that change in the weather tomorrow.  Any cooler and wetter weather would be a good thing to cool down both near the shore of Lake Ontario waters and the tributary waters.

Fish on, Fall Salmonid Anglers! Yes, king salmon and some brown trout have invaded the Orleans County Lake Ontario shallows and Oak Orchard River runs have begun. But the big news from this charter captain is there is another fabulous fishery set up on the 70 to 120 foot ledge featuring chrome “feeding” chinook up to 15#, 75 to 105 downrigger depths and steelhead at 40 to 50 feet down. Tactically it’s a basic spoon bite. Find the baitfish piles and action up! During last week, fishermen from 10 feet to 400 feet also hit a scattered “dark riverbound” king salmon so those fish will soon hit the Oak’s river mouth staging then running the Oak Orchard River. Cooler weather and fall rains will trigger more runs. Watch the weather, get rigged for more salmon.

Through the past end of week and weekend, there were some cooler temps, showers and gloom so more Kings seemed to be on the move.  There should be good river mouth conventional gear action right through the beginning part of this week.  The forecast is for warmer and clear so not sure if the recent uptick in near shore big Lake O movement will prevail or translate to upstream movement in the Oak.  A few more anglers are out and about with the most legitimate action concentrated nearer the river mouth.

Wow! The week running up to Labor Day featured some tough weather and rough water! The cool part about August at "the Oak" is the big west winds deliver the mature Kings into the Orleans County/Lake Ontario Ledges. The big Kings are in!

Over Labor Day weekend, good catches of 10 to 20 pounders came out of 90 to 120 FOW east and west of Point Breeze. A 29#+ monster was landed on a Caledonia, NY "rec" boat by a young boy. What a thrill! Yours truly had a veteran group including a 10 yr old niece from South Carolina who used the fighting chair on Troutman 2 to haul in 2 whoppers over 24#!  Way to go, kids!

They're back! The Orleans County waters of Lake Ontario once again are teaming with big hungry king salmon. The first key area you want to hit are the 85 to 125 feet of water between the "Pump House" - a long troll - to the Little House".  Every time the wind turns to west , schools of matures show up. The fishing depths to rig your lure may range from 40 to 80 feet down. Myself, I am staying with an "O" Frawg spoon program. Yesterday, Ohio anglers hit them - slob to 26 # including 3 double headers! Many good boats ("rec" and charter) are having terrific action in this area. It is hot!

The Oak's offshore waters 26.5 to 29.5 lines - that's 280 to 500 ft of water are even hotter lately. The charters Pisces, Irish Thunder and Reel Excitement were heard talking about crazy good action on multi year class king and whopper steelhead when ever safe, calm conditions allow venturing to the shipping lanes. Always keep with the fleet especially when out deep, ok!

Fish On! Man, the consistent king salmon action off the entire Orleans County ledges goes on and on!

Prime fish holding depth ranges widely from 40 to 150 feet of water. Get up and set your downriggers at 35 to 70 feet deep and get your fighting belt on. A number of riggings are getting hit including spoons, flasher/fly and "meat" rigs as I guide my charter groups.  It's easy to see the recreational and charter boats are all getting hooked up.

Here is a tip for the many visiting recreational boat anglers to enhance your chances of even better catches. The currents along the inside water - really from Bald Eagle Harbor to Green Harbor, "Chrome Dome" - spread the schools of feeding salmonids literally over miles of flushable water. So, it's best to spread out avoiding tight packs of boats. This way everybody has room to run their favorite long line rigs like copper and leadcore. Take note that a reel screaming 15 pound "teenager" Chinook hooked on a ten color leadcore line may be 700 feet away from the lucky boat!

Wow! All week long, strollers found hungry king salmon from "Chrome Dome" to "the Nose" in 45 to 65 feet of water. Lots of salmon! The consensus at the Orleans County Marine Park free fish cleaning unit was the spoon program attracted most hits.

Wow! The waters from 10 to 30 feet both east and west of the "Oak" are flush with quality fish! This quality "mixed bag" is dominated by king salmon and brown trout.  The consensus is that a mix of downriggers, small spoons and board lines rigged with 3" stickbaits was hard to beat all week.

Fish on Everybody! The Lake Ontario waters off the Orleans County coastline are setting up with good stained water in 8 to 15 ft of water. Here, the combination of warmer water temperature, baitfish and the cover of the “mudline” is drawing quality trout and salmon.

  12. This week’s STREAM fishing report is from Ron Bierstine from Oak Orchard Tackle and Lodge, Tues., Apr. 23, 2019.

    Quote

There’s a good head of turbine water in the Oak with diminished overflow water after the previous weekend rains. Look for slightly high and stained flows with about 1 – 2 ft of visibility; dropping toward medium and clearing if there is no more significant precipitation. Nice spring temps around 50 – 60°F but dropping down at night are forecast through the week so no great quick water temperature spike is expected in the near future.

Thanks to the rain toward the end of the weekend through early Monday, flows in the Oak and other area smaller tributaries are back up.  There are real nice conditions to help preserve the steelhead action and maybe draw in some more fresh fish.  Flows in the Oak are slightly high with what looks like a good head of turbine water.  There has been no overflow water and water color is stained at about 2 ft of visibility that may get a little dirtier through today.  Seasonably cool temps are in the forecast today and tomorrow with warmer temps and a chance of more precipitation by the end of week.  Look for flows to hang in around high–ish – or go higher if there is anymore significant precipitation.

Ideal fishable flows in the Oak are at about medium with 2 ft or so of stained visibility.  Reports of some water level fluctuations through yesterday probably as a result of a hydro plant emergency shutdown, and today looks like the good flows are restored.  A bit of rain early Monday should maintain flows so look for medium – ish flows to prevail through the week provided there is no new significant precipitation.  After a couple of warm days, the forecast ahead this week looks seasonably cool so look for the good conditions to hang in without any great water temp spikes in the near future.  Windy conditions are expected today.

Trout season is open today so time to fish for some steelhead.  No wait.  Oh yeah, there is no closed season!

Thanks to rain through the weekend all the tributary flows are high and dirty.  Flows in the Oak are high consisting of lots of turbine water and some overflow water.  Water color is one foot or less of visibility.  There are some anglers on the water today with unknown success.  The other area small tributaries are high and dirty.  Through Sunday night there was 2 - 4 inches of wet snow, and 6 inches along the lakeshore.  That is melting now and will add to the most recent runoff.  Forecast is for warmer temps thru the rest of the week but no unseasonable warm up so no major water temp spikes expected for now.

Nice flows in the Oak are still somewhere near slightly high or just less.  Good upstream supplies have been keeping these "high-ish" turbine flows going.  Chance of flows are coming down some toward say medium through this week with no significant precipitation in the near forecast.  Forecast is a chance of precipitation toward the weekend and slowly warming temps through this week.  Any precipitation for maintenance of flows and some stain to the water would help preserve the nice tributary conditions.  Water color on a slow clear in the Oak with still some cold nights.  Water color is going on 3 ft of visibility.

Temperatures are improving for this mid-week period with highs forecast in the 30’s or 40°F.  There is a chance of rain showers going to snow showers toward the end of the week.  Overall it looks like a break towards more spring-like conditions.  Flows are all pretty typical of springtime, higher and stained.  Just what steelhead like for fresh migrations and staging to spawn.  Even a tiny water temp warm-up is likely to bring some steelhead to gravel.  There is still ice cover on Lake Alice and when that goes away look for warming temperatures in the Oak.  Flows for now are high with about 1 – 2 ft of visibility.  Flows look wide open in the turbine channel with diminished overflow water.  Look for continued high-ish flows in the Oak, maybe falling back to toward just slightly high.

There was just enough warm weather over the weekend to bring flows up.  Sort of stalemate temperatures for the beginning part of the week so far - 30-ish°F during the day and colder, below freezing at night is the forecast.  So for now, flows will be in a stalemate at high-ish.  Look for warmer temperatures in the forecast and flows will likely be going toward blown for the middle or end of the week.  For now flows in the Oak are high with just a little bit of overflow water.  Turbine flows look pretty well wide open.  Water color is about 2 ft. of visibility and should get dirtier over the next day or so.

Downstream slow water has begun to open up.  There are guys on the waterway today getting some drifts in mostly nearer the dam or in the downstream slow water.  The other area smaller tributaries have high and dirty flows that are trying to bust out all the ice and debris and for now are mostly jamming up downstream and/or running over top of some of the upstream fast water.

Welcome back to winter!  Weather conditions are more like what we might have expected a month or so ago then for March and heading into Spring.  But alas - warmer temps are forecast toward the weekend!  For now through the mid week, temperatures are unseasonably cold and dropping down at night with windy conditions today (Tuesday) and a chance for off and on snow tonight and tomorrow (Wednesday).  Forecast is for any significant accumulations mostly south of the area.  There's about 6 plus inches of windblown snow and ice here on the Lake Plain and more in protected spots.

The high winds have finally let up and cold weather has returned.  The forecast is for cold temperatures through the beginning of next week.  Long range forecast hints at a change in the pattern for warmer weather through March.  Area wide civilian snow is expected tomorrow of 3 - 5 inches and then a chance of snow again at the beginning part of the weekend.

Flows in the Oak are slightly high or maybe one notch less then high.  There's a good head of turbine water but it doesn't look wide open.  Water color is dirty with about a foot of visibility.  Look for flows to stay up in the short term and likely drop and clear some through the end of the week toward medium to slightly high.

We're back to more wintry weather after a few inches of snow throughout Monday night.  Cold temperatures are forecast through the mid week with a warming trend toward the weekend and a chance of rain showers Wednesday.

For now, flows are all dropping and clearing.  Flows in the Oak are about medium or maybe just one notch less with mostly clear water color of 2 - 3 ft of visibility.  Fishing pressure is light and there is no significant icing conditions.  The other area smaller tributaries have moderate flows and mostly clear water color.  With dropping flows and cold temps hanging in, there could be some renewed icing in spots on the smaller tributaries.

Just when you think the weather will get somewhat consistent - it changes again.  Seems to be the pattern. This week's forecast temperatures are probably not as cold as anticipated, at least until the end of week or upcoming weekend, so look for most tributary flows to be open and fishable for now without icing back up.  Given this February time frame, it would take a good bit of consistent cold to lock things back up.  Snow is expected today changing over to a wintry mix of rain and then changing back over to snow tomorrow.  Warmer temps and the rain may get some runoff rolling again just as things were trying to retreat.

Thanks to couple days of warm temperatures, snow-melt and showers through last night, all the tributary flows have come up and gone off color.  Flows in the Oak are more or less between high and blown or headed more toward blown and dirty especially with any more precipitation.  In the Oak through yesterday, flows were high consisting of lots of overflow and turbine water.  Turbine flows looked like they were restored later in the day Monday from earlier low flows so look for something like wide open there.  Overflow levels should crest through about today or tomorrow and could be back on the rise with forecasted precipitation later this week.  Temperatures are forecast to cool back down with a one day bump back up Wednesday.

Flows in the Oak are something like just shy of medium or between moderate and medium.  In the short term,  look for retreating flows likely toward moderate and clear.  Water color is just slightly stained at about 3 feet of visibility.  Some flows are passing through the overflow channel from over top the spillway.  There is some flow through the turbine channel too.  It looks about 75% overflow and 25% turbine.  Not sure why Brookfield is not passing maximum flow through the hydro plant while water passes through the overflow channel from over top the spillway. (Under what is not a high water event.)  There may still be something going on at the hydro plant - and if we find out anything we will let you know.

Fishing pressure remains pretty light with extremely cold temperatures and wind forecast through the rest of the week.  The real cold weather is not expected to be prolonged though, with moderating temperatures expected by the end of the weekend.  Heavier Lake Effect Snow is forecast southwest of the area off Lake Erie with no major accumulations are expected here.
