  1. Hey guys- I’m the one who capsized Saturday night :( I hit something in the water about 2 miles out on the way home around 9-930pm. We took on water from the back end and the boat went under within about 40 seconds. I run a 19’ Starcraft offshore. My gf, her father and 9 year old son all swam back with their life jackets and a cooler as floatation as I told them to swim toward the red blinking light. I stayed with the boat as it stayed upside down with an air pocket and the closed cell foam I put under the floor doing its job. I swam it back to within about 1/8 mile to port and it stayed there until dad and I towed it back to the dock around 1AM. No one was hurt. My boat is totaled. I was not ticketed for anything. The 9 year old had his jacket on already as that is state law and good thing to. I had enough time to pass out life jackets  to everyone but me. Coast guard picked me up around 11-1130 just outside the break wall. Thanks to the two kayakers who hung with me for the last 20 mins or so. There’s some serious guilt for putting everyone’s lives in danger. Just glad everyone’s ok.

just wanted to set the record straight as the reports have not been accurate. My season is obviously over. For the record, the water was calm all night. I apologize to everyone who I’ve caused delay. We got a few laughs at the launch as the boat was turtled there for a few hours.

The increased line diameter is only one factor in the equation. The line texture is another factor. I think that the longer you experiment with this stuff over time you'll find that when the fleas are really thick line diameter and perhaps texture become nearly irrelevant. Even on the same body of water they vary in density both vertically and horizontally in the water column. This is why some folks report that the fleas are not bad and other report they are "terrible" on the same day on the same body of water, same side of lake and they may be using the same diameter and types of lines with somewhat different results.Another concern is they TYPE of waterflea encountered. The spiny flea seems to generally easier to get off lines while the fishhook type seems tougher to get off. They are both a pain in the butt regardless. My hunch is that the fishhook type are a little more susceptible to the increased line diameter because of the size of the hooking apparatus which limits their grip so maybe when these guys are the culprit encountered they don't seem quite so bad because they can't adhere real well to the larger diameter line. I know this explanation is subjective and not scientifically based but I know for sure line  diameter itself is not the only factor involved because 150 and 200 lb test dowwnrigger wire is also affected when they are real thick and can be so bad as to impeded retrieval of the wire.

I think the question was more asked of what’s the downside to using a thicker line diameter. I agree with you tho, I think they’d latch onto a telephone pole if you present them the opportunity 🤣🤣🤣

I have to agree. This yr we changed and despoiled all rigger poles with 40# big game And then leader appropriately. Fleas are very minimal on them. Is there a downside that I am missing to what we are doing?

Increased line diameter. Really it. You can prob land a small whale with 40# BG.

I keep hearing chatter on the Ship to Shore radio channel 9 about charters heading for the Shelf.

Where is the Shelf? Where is it in relation to the Stony Point Light House.  I just recently found out that Os or Oz means Oswego.

Thanks for helping helping a new guy.

    K

I think this will vary with person to person. There’s a shelf out straight from Mexico point toward Oswego. There’s also a long shelf up by Henderson harbor that guys fish Lakers for.

I fished a little shallower off the north dunes Friday morning, 80-95 feet of water, great marks and caught a couple salmon then went in, trolled north because south winds, most if not all boats out deeper... Don't be afraid to check shallow, that's my rule. I usually only fish a couple hours anyway when I go in because kids get up and want to go tubing.

It’s a good rule. You didn’t happen to lose a pink tube did you? Found one floating and took it to the launch but no one claimed it lol

And I always add 1 ft to wave predictions if they are calling for 1-3. You can bet on 2-4. Would like a dollar for every time I’ve seen the forecast and gotten to the lake to find a maelstrom. Oh well. Go to breakfast. Lol

I typically won’t go out if it says 1-3’, I run a 19’ aluminum. It’s basically gotta be flat for me to fish lol

  7. Traveled north of the pond from Mexico point, and my god there was a zillion boats there. Worked 120-140, 2/8 with one steelhead and a nice king. White flasher/white meat rig took rips off the rigger Parked at 110. Fleas were atrocious. We handlined both of our fish lol

*side note- if you run a large boat, good for you. But don’t run it full throttle within 30 yards of me while I’m setting lines. Have some decency, the lake is huge.*

end rant. Some seriously inconsiderate charter captains out there, borderline illegal imo. I get it; time is money, but there were multiple instances where my small boat got pushed around by stupid people. But shout out to the guy in what looked to be a crest liner saber. He was nice.

thinner, plus the no stretch thing.

I think maybe these two are not a positive at all, you may find.

When end I first started, I ran braid dipseys. I now run wire dipseys and mono/flouro on everything else. I use braid as backing for my copper setups tho.

  9. You can use that. Not really sure why you’d use a 100’ leader. The braid will not stretch so although it is strong, it will not be very forgiving at all. If a salmon takes a rip and your drag is not set properly, it’s going to snap the line rather than stretch at all. Keep that in mind. I do not think you’ll find many guys use braid on riggers.  Plus the fleas will be bad with braid.

Not really Eel like. Scales are similar to carp. Jaw line like Lake trout.

Educate me guys- a bowfin and a gobie are different right? As I understand the bowfin seems to be a mud fish, do they pose any threat to alewives or any baitfish that would impact salmon/steelhead/brown population? Or are they just kinda doing their own thing, minding their own business?
