This is a different type of report for you guys up there on the big lake. I am in New Jersey and went down to the marina to pull my boat for some maintenance…..again. My bud and I thought we would chase Sea Bass and Fluke for a couple of hours before pulling the boat. We headed out to one of spots about 8 miles off the beach. We ended up with a dozen or so of mostly shorts. Then thing got interesting. A 10-12 foot Great White shark jumped 8 feet out of the water. We watched this thing splashing all over the surface and when it jumped again it came out of the water inverted with its mouth wide open. Amazing sight. It jumped 5 times. You could see the membrane over its eyes and all those amazing teeth. What a cool experience. We headed back into the bay and came across a couple of porpoise jumping and playing and the to end it another shark, this tim a thresher jumped and rolled on the surface maybe 200 yards from shore. It’s not salmon, but a really cool day

Yea, most handhelds transmit at 1 watt. Fixed units are 5 watt

The handhelds do not put out the same power that the larger units do. You may only get a couple of miles on them.I have two mounted VHF units on my boat and when I run offshore a sat phone is a must

I have a 9.9 on an 18’ Duckworth and get 6.2 mph so you’re doing well at nearly 10mph. I don’t have it hooked up to a tac so I don’t know the rpms but it’s full throttle.
I thought I would get to 18-20. Now with the correct prop I’m hopeful I will see 12-14

I have received the motor and started everything to get it mounted. I have all the parts to convert to a 20 HP. I plan on doing a 20 hour break in before swapping the parts over. I'm hoping to get 20-24 mph with the upgraded engin and a 9.25 x 11 inch prop
OK I did the break in and swapped the prop to the 9.25 x 11. It did not work out very well. 4500 rpm and 8.5 knots. I ordered the 9.25 x 9 and will try it out next week

Might be a rev limiter in the Suzuki motor you have to look in the manual or shop manual
Sent from my SM-A102U using Lake Ontario United mobile app
I’m looking into the rev limiters and the throttle position sensor. It’s a pain. Everything I try I have to drive the boat 20 miles to the lake to try things

Before you start messing around swapping parts to turn a 9.9 into a 20hp you should see what 9.9 does on a 16 footer. My neighbor put a 20 hp Suzuki on a 16’ Lund in place of a 25 hp Merc 2 stroke (boat rated for 30hp). With a driver and no passenger at wot the 20 hp Suzuki would go into over rev position with ecu going into limp home mode. With a passenger he can go wot otherwise solo he only runs about 80 percent throttle. Once you get used to the rpm limit not an issue and boat is plenty fast for what it is. Something to be aware of- no point in solving one problem only creating another. I knew guys that put 9.9 decals on 15hp to get around 10hp limits.
OK, So I mounted my 9.9 2021 Suzuki on my 16 ft Sylvan Pro Select. With the supplied 5 degree 4 blade prop. I could get 8.3 mph out of the engine. I installed the new ECM and Throttle plate to convert to a 20 HP motor. I also changed the prop to a 9.25 x 11. this is where the problems begin. Now the most I can get is 4400 RPM and a max speed of 7.7 MPH. Its not the prop. The engine just hits 4400 at 2/3 throttle and stops. if I trim the motor way up it still won't go over 4400 RPM. Any ideas

Keep the 175 on the boat. It need the power. 90 HP will just not be enough

Unless someone has been on the short end of the stick and stranded out there they may think dollars and cents is the main issue but once that happens your comment becomes VERY clear. You are right in your thinking safety concerns come way before the money. It only took once to make a believer out of me
I’m glad I have twins on my saltwater boat. Last year I blew a lower unit 74 miles offshore. Took a long time but I made it back

When I spend a day trolling for striper done by me (NJ) I burn through about 25-30 gallons with my twin 175s. This 9.9/20 will be on my 16 ft Sylvan pro select. I would think I will be able to troll all day for about 2 gallons
-
Looks good, I have mine mounted with the digital gauge. Everything seems to work. I am just over 3 hours into the break in. I’m going to take it out on a local lake Saturday and try to get 3 more hours on it. I’m going to convert to the 20 hp when I hit 15 hours.
-
Yea the cables ran me $58 each for 16 footers
-
I have the elec start remote with power trim 20 inch shaft. I have the new restrictor and the 20 hp ecu. I won’t put that stuff on until the break in is done. I bought all the extra parts from Precision Marine in fl

good luck with the stripers. My boat goes in the water for the season in 3 weeks. I am at the end of the Hudson in Raritan Bay and mostly troll for them. Come May I will anchor and use clams for bait. Yea, stripers are really dumb and easy to catch. Fun stuff

I would buy the Suzuki 9.9 HP outboard. it is a good price and for an added $400.00 you can convert it to a 20 HP by just changing a couple of parts. I just purchased on from Portaboat in CA.
$2650.00 delivered. I am in break in now and then I will install the 20 hp ECU and flame arrester making it a true 20 HP outboard

Just watched a video of the 9.9 to 20 conversion. Under $450 for the ECM and restrictor plate on intake. 10 mins and done. Interesting.

Just curious, the specs on the prop differ from the data on the porta boat website and the Suzuki official website. Porta bote spec is a 4 x 9 3/4 x 10. (4 blade 9 3/4 dia with 10 pitch). Suzuki is 4 blade x 10 dia x 5 pitch. That would make more sense.
Which one came on your DF 9.9BT ?
Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
Mine came with the 4 blade 10 x 5

Boat is a 1996 Ranger250C. Engines are Mercury Optimax 175s counter rotating. I replaced the powerheads and lower units 4 years ago. with new 2010 heads. not sure about hours. my guess would be around 300 hours. I will see if I can get a reading on them. the boat has a 9 foot beam. Handles rough water well. What else???
