  1. There are many on the market but the old standard is to use a fine file and sharpen the hooks from the shaft towards the point tip on three sides if the result "catches" on your finger (not penetrates:lol:) you should be good to go. If the hook is rusty replace it.

Thank you I will try that, unfortunately I had a few hooks/spoons rust due to rain getting into my spoon storage. I will definitely replace the hooks but I don’t think there’s much I can do about the rust on the spoons

  2. I have some spoons that I have used for a while with lots of wear and tear and I’m not sure if I should replace the hooks or if sharpening them would be a better option. If so does anybody have a recommendation on a good hook sharpener? Thanks!

  3. Personally these bass tournament boats are super annoying.  They come through our area with these ugly boats, huge motors, and fish finding tech that borders on unfair chase.
They pick off the big females from the points of our shoals and take them 30 miles downriver.
They horse their fish in with these heavy lines, pop them in the live well, and off they go to the next waypoint on their computer that they input when they "prefished" with the sonar the previous day.

I know they bring money to the north country, but for those of us who have been up in the 1000 islands for generations, to see these yahoo's blow through our little fishing spots with the nascar outfits and the gaudy 300hp boats, we call em the human cormorants.

Haha agreed but I think the proper name would be Basshole!

  4. I finally just replaced the old Green Hornet with one that won’t sink hopefully.  It was docked for two months but I will be trailering it and want to clean it up.  What is a good cleaner to get the algae and scum off the bottom without hurting the gel coat?

I just used on and off gel fiberglass hull and bottom formula and it did fantastic without hurting my gel coat

For anyone interested in taking action against the issue, there is a chance to stop the expansion of the Bitcoin project, this Monday at 7pm at the Torrey town hall they are deciding wether this expansion will take place or not. Although a presence at the meeting would be great there are many other ways to help. Spreading awareness through contacting the Torrey planning board before the meeting to discuss the harm that the mining will cause on the local environment. ([email protected])

  6.

Last year I experimented with sabiki rigs on Seneca using a spotlight and to my surprise we crushed them pulling up a few at a time. However this was mid summer when bait balls were easily located, I was wondering if anyone has had luck finding sawbellies this time of year? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  7. Sadly haven’t been out on Cayuga since august and I’m giving it a shot tonight and taking out a family friend. Last time I was out jigging was pretty good around sheldrake but it’s been so long I’m not sure about the fish migration considering either trying taganauk or deans. Has anybody had any luck jigging recently?

  8. Fished Seneca for the first time since the derby today, West side Severne to Long Point didnt mark much at all, fished Caywood to Lodi Point and screen was littered with bait balls the whole time. Ended up getting skunked, ran spoons off a rig rod and down-riggers with Dipsey divers and Chinook divers.

Praying that Lady Seneca recovers soon!

    Amen!

Betcha a dollar that there's lakers down under the sawbellies.

Year ago used to do this with my grandfather on Canandaigua - after we started getting sawbellies, we'd  drop  a Seth Green rig over the side and put the sawbellies on 5-6 ft leaders and wait for the lakers to start smashing em.

Saw this on my screen today looks like a nice laker underneath the baitfish sometimes watching the screen is more entertaining than the fishing haha

  10. Once the sun goes down a lantern over the side will bring them right to the surface, as they start to show up dim the light and they'll come closer. A small hook sabaki rig will jig them up nicely.Put them in a cooler about a 5gallon size with about 1/4 cup of dissolved Kosher Salt, do not use table salt the Iodine will kill them, add a couple of ice cubes to slowly lower the water temp. The Kosher salt keeps a slime coat on their body and keeps them nice and hard not mushy.Salt is the game changer keeping them alive. Also a good aereator , I like to use 2 minnow-misers

Thank you! If I am trying to keep them alive for a couple days what will I have to do to keep them cool?

  11. I have always used a seine net when sawbellies are in close to shore while spawning but once they finishing spawning in the shallows I am left with no way to catch them. The local bait shops I have seen have live sawbellies and I didn’t know if there is possibly a way to catch them while they are deep that is legal these days, any help would be greatly appreciated!

  12. Algae blooms are the result of too much nutrient rich water and increased photosynthesis stepped up from the availability of the critical nutrients (e.g. nitrates or phosphates for example) combined with higher water temps and available sunlight. Numerous things add to the problem; many of which are created by humans (e.g. farming near lakes, manure washing into streams ending up in the lake, and chemicals from vineyards near lakes, fertilizer run off from lawns. sewage emptying into lakes etc.) among a whole host of other things  adding up to too many nutrients providing a "petri dish" environment for the algae. Blue/Green algae is very toxic to both animals and humans and the effects can range from skin irritation to death.

Definitely agree, many people wonder why Seneca has bad problems with the blue green algae but with the hot summer and the abundance of chemicals and manure run-off leaves an obvious answer. I am not one to judge but I don’t know how anyone would call the bloom a hoax as I live on the lake and when august comes the water near shore grows a thick layer of toxic water where I can’t even let my dogs swim.

  13. These are "boat rods", but I have been using them on downriggers for a few years now. I like the large stainless steel quad foot eyes as the fleas don't get stuck, lots of backbone with  a very soft tip, one piece blank.

Thank you, I have very similar rods and they are great but I heard that spinning rods are easier to use while jigging with the action and drag but maybe I should just use the ones I have? I don’t know.... IMG_1703.JPG

  14. I spoke to couple of those bass guys Friday morning in Montezuma. They said they we fishing Cayuga Lake for their Pennsylvania State Bass Tournament. I asked shouldn’t the Pennsylvania State Tournament be in Pennsylvania? I don’t care, I just thought it was funny.

  15. Hello, I am speaking from a new account (old account Bswinn) just wanted to know who is planning on participating this Sunday on Cayuga? I am planning on possibly heading out of deans if weather permits but I normally jig over on Cayuga so I will have to experiment different tactics. Judging by recent talk of Cayuga Downriggers and dipsys sound promising but I might have to play it safe with a Seth green. Weather looks iffy good luck to the other participants!
