If you snap the weight on your leader you will loose the whipping action of leadcore. It is best to snap it on the leadcore near the backing to leadcore connection.

makes sense, appreciate the advice!!  Normally I'll hook my inline board to the backing behind the last color... so if I hook the snap weight there, I assume I need to give the weight some extra line to dive behind the board which seems like a lot of extra line on top of an already very long line.....   could I get away with hooking it say halfway (at the 5 color point) or maybe at the 7 color point and still get that whipping action?

  2. I picked up some Offshore 3 oz Guppy snap weights today to use with my 10 color setup.  I've never used them before.  If I hook the 3 oz snap weight up to my leader, 50 ft back from my spoon or flasher, and then let out the 10 colors, approximately how deep will it be running at say 2,0mph?

Thank you, its a blast. The last couple of years I've been considering auto pilot to make things easier when fishing alone. I think it would be a game changer regardless of whos on the boat

Yes.  Autopilot is a game changer -- not sure how you are trolling solo without it!  I guess you can pull it off on a flat lake, but with any wind you are screwed trying to land the fish

They're there if you are derby fishing. We have to put fish in the boat for multiple customers, so grinding out a few big ones isn't always the case. Offshore fishing is so much more consistent, and to be honest the big dark Salmon don't do it for me anymore. IMHO they look horrible in pictures. I also can't look a customer in the face and tell them that this fish, who is shutting down it's digestive system and starting to decay, is great table fare. That being said a lot of people eat Salmon from the rivers and enjoy them. It comes down to what the customers want. We'll deliver whatever that is.

Yes I hear ya, I certainly prefer offshore fishing even though I don't eat them!  But to not have to run 10 miles out when you have a smaller boat, older people onboard or sea sick prone people, it's enticing.  Personally, I've only tried inshore staging fishing a few times without much success.  Hoping to to do a little of both for my upcoming trip.   How does your technique differ for the inshore stagers compared to offshore?

  5. Fished out of Oswego this past weekend, Saturday started off fast 4 Kings in the 1st hour after sunrise, all on Magnum spoons 100-140 down on rigger.
1st fish on Dipsy 300 on wire 4 more kings were caught throughout the day all kings 19 -24 lbs.  We go this same weekend every year and normally have a good trip. glad no Harbor Fest so we can launch out of Oswego.  We normally have a good weekend when we go this same weekend.  Looking forward to next trip soon.

  6. I did something different as well this week. We went out of Oregon Inlet on the outer banks ,NC. We fished the gulf stream and I caught a 5.3 foot 400 pound plus blue marlin with the help of drlfc. It gave the full performance of dancing on the water and jumping. According to drlfc it took me about 40 minutes to get him next to the boat where he was released to fight another day. I will get a "Released Blue Marlin Citation in the mail from the state of North Carolina.
My worry is that after this milestone catch, it will be hard to feel satisfied with a puny 30 pound salmon.

Wow incredible — that’s on my bucket list!

  7. Nice Fish, Save a few Please !

Well you will have a chance to catch our fish as we successfully released 90% of all we caught this week using a rapala lip grabber tied to a paracord and towing fish behind the boat for a few minutes to revive… this may have been the highlight of the trip. I hate just tossing a fish overboard to float away. Yes I know they are going to die anyway, but I have respect for these magnificent creatures.

We caught over 20 matures in 3 days, and ended up cutting the trip short due to weather and my old man being tired!

Key take aways… we were fortunate/lucky to find bait and fish in a short period of time but we were prepared with all the right gear to put fish in the boat once we found them, and we weren’t shy about changing things up when it wasn’t working. Every day is different and the fishery is constantly changing. All you can do is to have a plan based on limited information — weather patterns, reports, previous experiences etc, and then adapt from there.

My two 300 weighted steel setups on inline planer boards caught 75% of our big fish. We rarely marked fish when we marked bait… but they were lurking on the perimeter…

It was a heavy spoon bite but meat and flashers drew them into the spread and still produced several 20lb+ fish. My spoon rigger and slider caught a lot of steelhead which were blast and kept things fun between the big kings. There are some incredible steelhead out there…

Good luck to all fortunate enough to experience this amazing fishery and thanks to all who contributed knowledge to make our trip a big success!!

    Fish on!!!

  8. July 24 - Rock and his pals from PA joined us this morning on their annual charter. Lots of chop busting went down today! As for the fishing it was a tough bite, but we figured a little something out to get our clients some nice fish. Flashers just weren't the deal today and we slowly pulled them and replaced them with spoon offerings.

    Top spoons today were:
DW Mag Green Jeans on a 300' A-TOM-MIK copper
A green/Glow/UV spoon we found at a local shop fired several times on the 400' A-TOM-MIK copper
FishUSA's custom DW Glow Roy Boy and Glow Gladiator on our 85 & 100' Cannon Optimum downriggers.
DW Green Jeans on a 65' Cannon Optimum downrigger
All our downriggers were Mupped with matching spoons.

July 25 - "Doc" and Kurt, regulars from PA, joined us last night and this morning on Lake Ontario to chase Salmon and Trout. Not a lot of pictures were taken of "charter fish" because we put them back rather quickly due to them not wanting to keep any fish. The bigger ones, as usual, fought to the death and we're not revivable.

Best water for us was 250-350' on both trips. Saturday afternoon we fished East, and this morning we fished West. Most fish came 70' and deeper. Top spoons were Carbon 14, Glow Gladiator, and Glow Roy Boy. The flasher bite wasn't great for us, but late morning and in the afternoon they seem to go better for us. Yesterday afternoon we took a few fish down 175' on a meat rig loaded with a Soco Prime cut. Our best flasher/fly combo today was a DW 8" Spinny Kryptonite/A-TOM-MIK Glow Stud fly.

July 27 - This morning we had three generations on board from Wisconsin. They've been on a fishing road trip the last few days, and ended it chasing Salmon out of the Oak with us today. The fishing has been tough the last week, and today was no different. Our big Salmon today was 24lbs. Jack, the youngest, caught his biggest fish ever right around 19lbs.

    Our best lures/presentations today were:
    > DW Glow tip Silver Green Glow on a 300' A-TOM-MIK copper
    > Big paddle in Seneca Special pulling an A-TOM-MIK big fin fly
Other set ups that took fish were a DW Gold Spook on a Cannon downrigger down 65', Kryptonite Spin Doctor/A-TOM-MIK Stud fly, Chrome two face Spin Doctor/A-TOM-MIK Stud fly. Everything was fished below 60' today.

Great work I’m sure your clients were thrilled!
With regard to not being able to revive fish… have you tried towing them behind the boat with a Rapala lip grabber and paracord? We successfully released more than 20 mature salmon this week, most were caught on long lines with an extended fight, including a 27lb monster that was dropped on deck during the photo op… I thought there was no way she was going to make it, but within a few minutes started swimming with the boat. We only had a couple that were hooked too deep that didn’t swim away. I know it’s one more step in the laborious process but it’s special being able to watch them revive, look you in the eye, and swim away.

  9. I didn’t even bring a cooler for my trip this week and have been trying to catch and release all fish alive…. Somebody on here posted the technique of hooking the fish with a lip grabber and towing behind the boat with a paracord, 10ft or so, in the motor wash until the fish revives…. Guess what,,,, it works incredibly. Thank you for this tip!!!

Caught several 20lb+ salmon, netted, Posed for pictures, etc, hooked up to lip grabber then towed behind the boat for 5 min or so. Fish starts swimming on its own after a few minutes and you can tell when it’s ready. Pull in, Unhook, and it swims down to the abyss! I Don’t like to kill unless I eat!

Works extremely well with Kings. Steelhead are a little more difficult but still works

Caught over 20 fish today, 12 mature big salmon and many on long lines which can be completely exhausting/lethal for the fish. When I hooked them behind the boat to revive, I got to see that beautiful creature up close in its habitat as it came back to life, unhooked and swam away. Really cool.
Just be sure to hook the salmon on the area between their tongue and jawbone with lip grabber.

  10. Slower day for us today, but weather was weird, strong storm came through and rushed us off the water 930am in high seas and mixed things up pretty good for the evening bite. Still managed to get 3 mature kings, best was 22lb for the nightcap. Several teen lb kings, multiple 10 lb steelhead, and many skippers in the evening. Got a double on rigger slider which was a first for me — small king and steelhead on same line, two spoons.

The Long line 300 weighted steel was best when the lake flattened out for the afternoon/evening. Silver streak Chilly Willy took 2 big steelhead and several 2/3 year old kings. Wire Divers were dead. Quite a few skippers on spoon rigger. Big 22 came on rigger 10 inch Mountain Dew spin doc with lucky sevens Bering strip.

Hopefully tomorrow will be more stable weather!

The bar is on fire this morning — 5 matures in first hour. Mostly 300 copper bites on mag spoons, one meat rigger. Now just got another monster on wire diver
