Not sure how many years this thread has been going but I suppose we need to keep it going! I encourage you guys contribute to help keep this thread going. Last year I shot one of my target bucks on October 2 so it kinda killed the thread for me for a month plus until I had a fresh tag for regular season. Every year I mention that I am way behind with field work and this year is no different. In the past couple of weeks I have hung 11 cams and I still have 2 that need to be hung. I hung 1 new set late last week and have completed about 90 percent of my needed "field work". Im starting to see some good ones on cams already and almost every buck is still in velvet. I have seen a lot of scrapes in my travels. I have one cam on a mock scrape that has been getting regular visits also. GOOD LUCK! Well today was the day for us to get into the stand for the first time together this season. The weather was warm, the mosquitos were terrible, a lone doe read the script, my son was pumped. What more could you ask for lol. The second buck tag and a new doe tag were added to the app when I submitted my tag. These include modification of water releases and delayed opening of the river’s lower fly fishing section ahead of the annual run that attracts thousands of anglers every year. The lower fly fishing section runs upstream of the Route 52 bridge in Altmar up to the property boundary of the Salmon River Fish Hatchery. The 16 miles of river downstream of the Route 52 bridge in Altmar and the upper fly fishing area upstream of the Salmon River Fish Hatchery will both remain open to anglers during this period. “Anglers may reel in Salmon River catches in all areas besides a limited quarter-mile segment whose opening is delayed due to low water levels and flows,” said DEC Region 7 Director Dereth Glance.  “Delaying opening season until water levels are adequate for this stretch protects future world-class salmon and trout runs by ensuring successful egg collection at DEC’s Salmon River Fish Hatchery to sustain New York State’s thriving Lake Ontario salmonid fishery.”     This summer, below-average rainfall led to low and declining water levels in the Salmon River Reservoir. The Executive Committee of the Salmon River Flow Management Team, comprised of natural resource agencies and Brookfield Renewable hydroelectric facility that regulates reservoir water levels, canceled scheduled whitewater releases and delayed the annual increase in baseflow to conserve reservoir water and maintain suitable flows throughout the salmon spawning run. Under a federal license, Salmon River seasonal baseflows are normally increased from 185 cubic feet/second (cfs) to 335 cfs on September 1, as long as water levels in the Salmon River Reservoir are above a critical threshold. Levels are currently below that threshold. Additionally, significant precipitation is not forecasted for the near term, prompting DEC to recommend a delay in the scheduled baseflow increase.  DEC’s recommendation is based on abnormally high water temperatures coupled with low water flows in Salmon River tributaries, including Beaverdam Brook where migrating Chinook salmon access DEC’s Salmon River Fish Hatchery for egg collection supporting the State’s successful stocking program. Increasing baseflows prematurely would likely cause Chinook salmon, currently “staging” in Lake Ontario, to begin their spawning migration into the Salmon River. Fish could be stranded or killed if water temperatures remain high.  To increase the probability that sufficient numbers of salmon reach DEC’s hatchery to sustain the salmon stocking program, the popular lower fly fishing section, located just below the hatchery and typically where large numbers of salmon and anglers congregate, will not open on September 15. This section of the river (PDF) will remain closed until DEC collects sufficient numbers of salmon eggs at the hatchery. They were trolling kings in 100' and saw a large cruiser heading directly at them. The boat was closing fast and they barely got out of the way in time. The boat took his leadcore and a diver rod for a ride. The wake almost swamped his boat. The driver was slumped over the wheel! He called 911 and reported the incident. Thank god he got out of the way in time! This just goes to show how important it is to have a proper look out while trolling!Mon, 14 Sep 2026 18:13:17 +00006 year old Lowrance skimmer transducer: #1. A used rear station HDS unit stopped showing sonar information this spring spontaneously- hooked the transducer up to the dashboard HDS gen 2 display that had been previously Ethernet linked to the used rear station used HDS unit. Depth was displayed and bottom visible when in range but very little bait or fish detail. I swapped the used HDS rear station unit with the rear station unit from my other boat ( this one I had purchased new in 2019) . On the first trip using this unit the sonar information seemed normal . Yesterday I used this combo again and at first all was well but after I had gotten off the ‘shelf’ I was expecting the unit to show increased depth. It did not! I shut the unit off and turned back on. I was now on plane and initially it displayed no depth which I have experienced before so I thought nothing of it . I slowed down and began getting sonar information HOWEVER- despite being in range ( 250 fow / range at 300) the bottom was not displayed, changing range to 400 made no difference. Then I stopped getting any sonar information despite turning the unit on and off several times. I fished deep water with no sonar information despite turning. When I went in , I briefly had sonar information for a second once. When I got back into canal heading to the launch I suddenly had sonar information again in 12 to 6 feet until I shut off electronics at the docks. So- just replace the skimmer seems like the best move. Thoughts? Fished the marks and went 3 for 6, all in 60+ degree water. Lake too angry for my wife, she couldn't even stand up in the boat when we were going into the waves and tripled up, she did much better when we ran with them. Netting by myself was an adventure, lost one when the hooks caught the net. Went 5 for 6 on Kings and one small brown. Not bad for a weekend warrior. No Fish Hawk just downriggers and Dipseys. 60 to 120 FOW. Down 60 on riggers 25' behind balls. Divers on # 3 out 160. Flasher Flies and Meat rigs. They love Hammer Flies! No photos too share just a pain to download them. Nothing huge all in the teens but fun and that's what it is all about. Well it's off to Kentucky for early season Bow Whitetails. Will try more fishing when I return. (rewind to beginning) Mentions the move to mouth stocking (to avoid stream "bottlenecks") and in some places to Fall yearlings instead of Spring yearlings. Lake had a solid chop to it but started to lay down as we finished up the morning. My oldest son and I decided to keep it simple for my Birthday cruise. So we settled on setting up in 230ish to 70ish on a south troll and going with the waves south straight towards the mouth. Riggers parked at 48 and 59 ft down divers out 120 to 130 on a 2.5 setting we finished the morning with great and steady action 16 for 22 a mix of good steelhead younger and mature kings.
