  1. Time to get back out fished solo............ tad late but was in brown mode again......was at spot at 8 am..... set up out deep and time to mess with minn kota i pilot ( REAL men don't read directions ): anyway picked a bow up 55' down on rigger..... after a bit it was time to get directions out..... picked up one more bow same spoon same rigger same depth.....got the thing to work not sure what I did but the control was great could get in back still see depthfinder and X4 and steer with remote.... dropped 55' rigger to 61' and dropped probe rigger to 55' ..... started banging lakers picked up 4 at the depth and lost 2 other fish....brought the 61' back to 55' and probe to 45* picked up one more bow ran into lots of weeds and it was getting pretty hot so called it at 10ish..... see if I can get that thing to work again..... other than set up and when I ran into weeds I was working 65' to 118' bait has schooled up a lot since the last time out pods are huge then nothing for a while..... was getting hit with most every big bait pod , never worked back thru any of them......
  2. Hoot , King and I got out in good shape this am headed south and set started setting up by 6:30 am...... sun was still not peaking over the hill yet I had high hopes of getting into the browns...... screen was good , lots of marks , bait just could not find any takers so started pulling and changing spoons ........ was running two rigger then put the slidediver out pulling a spoon also......finally the 61' rigger goes...... I'm on it......good fish ...... just doesn't want to come up...... bring him/her in about 50' or so and the dreaded long-distance-release-to-fight-another-day-happens..... Oh well got the color they want I hope it's one I had FLT paint up for me that was HOT for browns last year ( one day )..... then we started getting into lots of weeds and could not work the "browntrout-water" so we moved out to around 220' - 240' and set back up.... I added a wire dipsy with BTI UV and sliver fly...... 61' rigger goes off again Hoots on it ( good he has NOT lost a fish in a long time ) good fight good fish BROWN !!!!! We box him......later the 210' wire rods goes I land a good laker box him......then again another laker put it back ...... one more time one more laker box him.....about 9:30am and still ruff so we called it a day and ran up to Ovid for gas......
  3. Up at 5:30 am made coffee , hear thunder , then rain and wind...... done more coffee !!!!

  5. Kinger , Hoot and I got out for a bit today been awhile. We went 1 for 4 all on wire rig 210' out UV BTI sliver fly.... one nice landlock with a lamprey scar..... clean side....
  6. I'm heading to Seneca Lake at the end of August for the first time. I'll be camping at Sampson State Park for a week. I am looking for any pointers or tips that anybody can provide me on fishing the lake, I guessing the north end. I do a lot of trolling in Lake Ontario for salmon rainbows and Lakers, as well as Lake Erie for walleye. I'd like to do some fishing for the same species. So looking for any helpful hints or areas that might be of help. I'm also getting into bass fishing, got all the new gear. So any help with that would be greatly appreciated. I guess locations if anybody's willing to give them up. I'm a catch and release fisherman. Thanks in advance. David
  7. Just couldn't get going too fast this am but finally hit the launch with Hoot and Kinger-boy pushing 10ish ...... motored over to west-side below Serverne set up and went south. Ended up just below Glenora weeds were the worst down there but we were in and out of them most of the trip...... started out with wire rod , flea-flicker on one rigger and 15# spoon rod on other ....fleas were more on the wire rod so pulled 15# spoon rod and put another fleafilcker rod down...... picked up one laker on wire rod 240' wire out UV BTI sliver fly ( deep six diver )........ picked up a good bow 47' down on X4 rigger and one small landlock lost two with a release and no one home also FLT alpha-alwife spoon ...... picked up 2 more small landlocks on other rigger on a SS DW alwife glow spoon...... got rained on two times but stayed fairly dry with top up..... speed at ball 2.7 to 2.9 ....... fished mainly from 90' to 120' FOW..... only trolled north on short time after we came back above Glenora to get away from weeds ...... then it got dark again wind changed some so I pulled every thing and came back in rain some on the way back then we got above it......
  8. Yesterday I finally decided to get my Seth Green/Thermocline rod in the water, BIG thumbs up to Mike Burt (Iron Duke) & Les (Sk8man) for ALL of their advice BOTH gave me their best secrets, which I promised not to divulge. Got my biggest laker to date, I'm learning more and more with each Seneca outing and am looking forward to learning more with this new rig. I also had 2 wire Dipsey rods out. Severne, heading South, 2-2.3 MPH, 165 FOW, 215', #2 setting on the mag Dipsey's, 100'+ on the "rig rod" using a 2# weight. Glow Green Dot and Glow Frog Racer Spin Doctors with matching Spin Glo bead combinations I tied up ( you thought I was going to say a "Reel-Hooked Up fly again huh ? ) rig rod 3 fish to the net, wire rod, 1 fish to the net and 2 "nobody home hits". I had a request for any fish over 20"'s from a friend 27"-5 Lb 14 Oz 26 1/2"- 7 Lb 3 Oz 22 1/4 "- 3 Lb 9 Oz 20 "- 2 Lb 14 Oz #1 & #2 were females full of eggs, ALL fish were GORGED FULL of freshly eaten sawbellies, #2 fish had 2 lamprey scars On the water at 5:30ish, back on the trailer by 8:30ish GREAT day to be on the water
  9. I've got a FLTA Captains Challenge Tournament this weekend on Seneca. Any sign of the nasty FLEA'S? Wanted to do a pre-fish. Just running out of time. I know the flees pop up in certain areas while other areas will be clear. I also heard possible floating weed pods. Any info on that?
  10. http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/769227.pdf This is pretty interesting. Anyone wondering what occurs in the lake with regard to temperature and current should have a look at this info. Some of it is too technical to understand, but the charts and graphs give a lot of info. Jason
  11. Today is the start of a 3-4 day stay on the lake field test. This am we launched about 6 am. My dad showed up with no coat and shorts. (it was pretty chilly) At the dock he decided he wanted to go home! Only problem is, my son is his ride back to Elmira. So i'm either solo, or my son runs back to my house for pants and jackets. Call my girlfriend, she packs a "care package" for my dad and son, send my son for the trip, and by 7 am were fishing. 2 nice landlocks right off the bat and then it just quits. 2 hrs later a couple more landlocks. the biggest was 6.1 lbs. Oddly enough, I have some all white lures I wanted to try. I put one out today, a rattling version of the KW, all white. All our fish came on that lure today. Nap time for now, back in the water around 6pm. (lure I was hoping to be hot, not so hot!) Maybe tonight. I will try to keep this post up to date, when I can. Jason

  14. Last night I fished Seneca with my girlfriend. We had one rainbow that had a deformed spine. Does anyone remember the days when rainbows had whirling disease? Has anyone else seen rainbows with deformed spines? This is the first one I have seen in years. I don't know if this fish had whirling disease, but it looked like what I remember as whirling disease. Just wondered if anyone else has seen this. Jason
  15. Carol , Kinger and I got out today for a little fishing and a boat ride. Hit the water about 11:15 am and pulled lines at 12:50 or so...... went 3 for 4 , boated a brown , 1 landlocks and a 2# perch ( 14.5" )..... bullfogy-frog and chicken feed ( now it's a perch spoon also ) ..... lost a hi-flying landlock

  18. Here's a refreshing bit of news from the DEC: You are subscribed to receive updates from DEC. Links to receive help or to change your preferences are provided below. Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. Hello, The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has issued the following press release: DEC to Begin Sea Lamprey Control on Seneca Lake Tributaries on June 9 Treatments Will Enhance Lake Trout and Salmon Populations and Sizes A program to combat parasitic sea lamprey will begin the week of June 9th on Seneca Lake tributaries in Chemung, Schuyler and Yates counties, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Paul D'Amato announced today. Efforts to control sea lampreys can reduce mortality rates for game fish that sea lamprey target, especially lake trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, and landlocked salmon, which are among the more popular fish for Seneca Lake anglers. Reducing the number of sea lampreys will also lead to fewer unsightly scars and wounds on sportfish. Typically, immature sea lampreys live in streams for three to four years before they become parasitic, descending into the lake to prey on other fish, like trout and salmon. Under the sea lamprey control program, a lampricide called TFM (3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol) will be applied to the streams in a continuous manner over a period of approximately 12 hours to kill the immature, larval form of sea lamprey. TFM is a selective pesticide developed in the 1950s that has been used extensively to control sea lamprey in the Great Lakes. This lampricide has been applied to Seneca Lake tributaries since 1982. Dosage levels of TFM that are lethal to larval sea lampreys can be harmlessly processed by most other aquatic organisms. Following an environmental impact statement (EIS) and public hearing prior to the start of the sea lamprey control program, DEC concluded that the program offers an effective and immediate measure for protecting the native lake trout populations in Seneca Lake. DEC further concluded that the project will not have any significant impacts to the environment or non target organisms exposed to the lampricide; however, some minor fish and aquatic invertebrate mortality may occur. The stream treatments do not pose any human health threats, but a precautionary measure, the State Health Department has advised people not to consume stream water from the treated tributaries and avoid fishing, swimming, livestock watering or irrigation in the treatment zone during and immediately following applications. Precautionary signs will be posted along the treated streams. On June 9th, weather permitting, DEC will begin to treat waters inhabited by juvenile sea lampreys in Catharine Creek and tributaries from the Chemung/Schuyler County line to Montour Falls. If weather conditions are not suitable, treatment may be postponed till later in the week or the following week.

  22. Hello, Posting for a co worker who was at Seneca (Sampson) last week and after pulling his boat out he went to the upper parking lot to secure the boat. While doing this put some equipment on the ground and never put it back in when he pulled out. I told him would reach out and see if by chance someone who found it was on here. He is from Sodus so was not very close by the time it was discovered what had occurred. Thanks and look forward to seeing everyone at Sampson soon. David Stalker 315-597-6961
  23. Camp closes this weekend so I'm on my last trips over the next few days...................today is out wind blowing like crazy right now and rain has just started coming down...........
  24. I had two hours to burn on Monday so I decided to get the boat wet for a quick run. This salmon was 5.75 Lbs and fought like a big brown. He went deep and towards the middle of the lake. Not the usual acrobatics that a salmon would display but I'd be a little sluggish too if I was swimming in 38 degree water. Dinner is served!
