  1. This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. This report was written on April 8, 2019. Oswego River/Lake Ontario report: According to Oz Angling Tackle: Trout fishing is the name of the game on the Oswego River right now. Steelhead and brown trout are being caught along the entire river. Anglers venturing up near the dam are having success using jigs, egg sacs, and beads while anglers fishing the lower river are catching mostly brown trout on jigs, swimbaits, and spoons. Some anglers are starting to use night crawlers as well, which can be a big difference maker on those days when it’s a relatively slow trout bite. At the current flow, these trout can comfortably hold throughout the entire river. The lower east side behind the hotels and the entire west side of the river are all worth fishing. The water flow is currently 8,550cfs. According to Capt. Andy Grisenthwaite of Broad Horizon Charters: The 2019 lake season is underway! Browns were plentiful yesterday out of Oswego. We also got some surprise Atlantics. Smithwicks and Yozuri’s on one side and spoons on the other kept us pretty busy. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, view the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely Brochure below. 2. This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. This report was written on April 4, 2019. Oswego River report: According to Oz Angling Tackle: The water is at a good level to fish from shore right now. The flow this morning is 6,660 cfs. Browns and steelhead are biting in the Oswego River right now. Browns are showing a preference for jigs and steelhead are responding to egg sacs or beads. As we ended the month of March, we saw a nice mixed bag of post and pre-spawn steelies in the system. April is lining up to be a solid month of trout fishing. Anglers have been finding some good trout activity in the river with steelhead, browns, and a rainbow or two. Dark steelhead are stacked up by the dam and browns are consolidating in the lower river. The trout fishing should only get better from here as water temperatures rise and more chromers enter the river. Oswego River report: According to Oz Angling Tackle: The water flow dropped significantly over the last few days. This morning it is running at 3,880cfs. This Friday and Saturday (Sunday warmer but some rain expected) should present a great opportunity to fish for steelhead on the Oswego River with relatively mild weather (30’s, light wind, no precipitation) and flows that will allow anglers to fish off the wall. More steelhead and walleye are showing up every day in preparation for their spawn this spring. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. Oswego River report: As was expected over the last few days the flow has risen with the snow melt and rain we have had. This afternoon it is flowing at 16,700cfs. Anglers are finding browns, steelhead and walleye with behind the hotels a good spot to try. Oz Angling reported a nice steelhead caught by an angler Wednesday afternoon using an egg sac under a slip float. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. 15. Oswego River report: The river flow has had a wide swing over the last few days along with the temperatures. It has been running between 6,000 cfs and 12,000 cfs since Thursday. This afternoon it is flowing at 9,590 cfs. On Saturday, areas of the river behind the hotels were iced over. With the warmer temperatures, that is not the case now. Look for brown trout, steelhead, and rainbows. Keep an eye on the water level as unseasonably warm temperatures this week will cause snow melt. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, view the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely Brochure below. 16. This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. This report was written on January 24, 2019. Oswego River report: The river flow dropped significantly over the weekend and has been running between 7,000 and 11,000 cfs since then. It is flowing at 10,100 cfs as of this morning. Look behind the hotels and along the westside river walk for browns, steelhead, rainbows and walleye. According to Oz Angling: As a float fisherman, one of the key aspects of your rig that you can adjust is the length between your float and offering. After having no takes while suspending my jig about 6 inches off the bottom, I slid my float 6 inches up my line so my jig was barely ticking along bottom throughout the drift. Within two drifts I had a nice male brown slurp the jig. One minor adjustment of your rig can make a world of difference in the realm of tributary trout fishing. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. 18. This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. This report was written on January 11, 2019. Oswego River report: According to Oz Angling Bait & Tackle: The Oswego River has been on and off over the past couple of weeks. With water temperatures in the thirties, the trout and walleye fishing can still be good but your timing has to be right. Most anglers are having to put in a couple of hours to get a couple bites this time of year. In addition to the browns, steelhead, rainbows, and walleye are most common this time of year. Jigs and swimbaits have been working well. The water flow is running at 15,300cfs this morning. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, view the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely Brochure below. The Oswego Fire Department offers loaner life jackets at no charge through its “Loaner for Life” program. For more information contact the fire station, 35 E. Cayuga St., at 315-343-2161. Oswego River report: With no significant precipitation over the last few days, the water level is slowly continuing to drop running at 13,400 cfs as of this morning. This remains a high water level for bank fishing so the lower east side behind the hotels is a suggested spot to try. Anglers have found browns, rainbows and a few walleyes using jigs or bottom bouncing egg sacs. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, view the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely Brochure below. 21. This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. This report was written on December 31, 2018. Our staff extends our best wishes for a safe and very Happy New Year! Oswego River report: The water level has been pretty consistent running between 16,000-17,000 cfs over the last few days. This morning it is flowing at 16,200 cfs. Rain is expected to move into the area late this afternoon and could be heavy at times with very strong winds. Conditions are expected to settle down tomorrow afternoon. With the high water level and fast flow, the lower east side behind the hotels is a suggested spot to try. Anglers have found browns, rainbows and a few walleyes using jigs or bottom bouncing egg sacs. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  22. This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. This report was written on December 26, 2018. Oswego River report: Although the water level was down under 13,000 cfs the end of last week, it increased on Saturday to just over 17,000 cfs. This afternoon it is flowing at 16,000 cfs. According to Oz Angling Bait & Tackle: Last week was a hit or miss week on the Oswego River. Early in the week the bite was pretty solid as anglers continued to find success catching browns, rainbows and a few walleyes on the lower east side behind the hotels using jigs or bottom bouncing egg sacs. The lower west side was also active casting lures. With the warmer temperatures the end of the week, things were lining up for a productive bite, however, anglers were reporting it was tough and many were working hard for a fish or two. Temperature increases this time of year that are significant and occur abruptly can sometimes leave the fish unsettled or unwilling to feed. Warmer temperatures are moving back in for Friday and Saturday and dropping into the 20s on Sunday. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, view the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely Brochure below. Our staff extends our best wishes for a safe and Happy Holiday! Oswego River report: According to Oz Angling Bait & Tackle: We’ve been putting our hand tied marabou jigs to work these last couple weeks and having excellent results. These hungry browns don’t seem to have much preference for size or color, as we’re catching many on a variety of jigs. The 1/16 ounce green head, white body, white tail and 1/8 ounce all black have done the trick. Some browns have not yet spawned. The river flow is currently 12,400cfs with some heavy rain predicted for tomorrow. Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, view the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely Brochure below.
