  1. Lake Ontario-Yesterday was another windy affair. The relentless wind seems to appear every other day. The good news is yesterday’s west blow created a nice mudline on the lake. Browns love stained water. The set-up has been the usual stick baits trolled in 8 to 20 feet of water. The warm pockets have been in front of the Port Bay channel and straight out from Sodus. The browns are also hitting out from Hughes’ Marina and west towards the power plant. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  2. Lake Ontario-A beautiful Atlantic Salmon was among the catches last week in Wayne County waters. Most of the charter boats are now cruising the shoreline for browns…and the browns are hitting. Most charters are using stickbaits because they are on-shore fishing in very shallow water. Spoons tend to snag. The trip out of Sodus Bay is a quick one. Rods are set-up as soon as you leave the channel. The action is nearly everywhere along the shoreline. You can troll next to Maxwell or head east towards Port Bay. Today’s wind is switching to the west which will set-up a great mudline. Brown trout love stained water. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  3. Lake Ontario-The browns are close to shore in 20 feet of water. Temps were @35 to 37 degrees off Sodus Bay. Remnant ice in the bay has delayed a few charter trips, however this week should see more trout action on the lake. The season has started and already the fishing has been phenomenal. You can launch smaller boats at the Marquetta Road launch on Route 14. You can also launch at Port Bay at the south and north end of the bay. The Port Bay channel is now open. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  4. Lake Ontario-The season has started and the small boats which can launch at Bear Creek in Ontario are trolling for the browns close to shore. They are catching a lot of “cookie cutters” however some nice 10 pounders were also in the mix. Most charter boats are gearing up for the season and some start fishing the first week in April. Most of the ice is broken-up in Sodus Bay, so as soon as they put the boats in it's “fish-on.” Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  5. Streams-The streams in Wayne County are all fishable with no ice or snow on the banks. Steelhead and holdover browns are still in the creeks. The steelies are hitting red small spoons, bright beads and egg sacs. The water flow is perfect on both sides of Maxwell at Lake Road. The ice should be melted on the Sodus Pier. If not today, then tomorrow when the temps will hit 50 degrees. You can cast out heavy spoons from the pier. Just be extra careful because the water temperatures are in the low 40’s which is lethal if you fall in the channel. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  6. Streams-There are a few openings in Maxwell Creek and the Bear Creek stream is open at the launch site. Warm weather is on the way so there will be more open areas to fish. The steelhead are hitting egg sacs dropped under torpedo bobbers. The fish being caught are bright and shiny…the normal color of late winter steelies. Bays-Some of the ice is getting darker in color so be careful ice fishing this time of year. Port Bay had 10 inches in different place, however some of the shoreline ice is breaking-up. The warmer weather will heat the shallow water shoreline and that ice will be the first to melt. The perch are still hitting near Third Creek. They were in 15 to 20 feet of water. Again use caution. Temps will be in the high 50’s on Thursday which will melt ice. Don’t use ATV’s this time of year. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  7. Streams-Cold nights have made Maxwell Creek freeze. There are openings, however they are small. It’s supposed to warm up this weekend with rain predicted so it might open-up more, however if lake effect snow arrives tomorrow it will be a mess. Don’t forget it’s time to change your clocks….Spring ahead one hour this Sunday. It’s much earlier this year. Bays-There is still five to six inches on Sodus and Port Bays. Some areas have 10 inches. There is a snow cover which makes it a challenge to pull a shanty. Follow the tracks of ATV or other sleds. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  8. Streams-Maxwell Creek is open with a great flow. There are sections with ice on the shore, however most of the creek is flowing. That of course can change very quickly. Salmon Creek in Pultneyville is also open as of today. The steelhead are hitting egg sacs both imitation and real. Just use caution as the banks are slippery. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  9. Streams-There are a few more openings in Maxwell Creek and the flow is decent. It’s a small stream however the steelhead are there. Another warm-up this weekend might produce more open water. Bays-The ice on Port Bay is a solid 9 inches. Sodus Bay has 8 to 10, however it’s not black ice so use caution where you fish. Carrying a spud…even in February…is always a good thing. The perch in Port Bay are moving away from the points. They are still in 25 feet of water; however, they could be moving to the shallower south end, ready for the spring spawn. The Sodus hotspots are the Trestle, Third Creek, and the east side in 20 to 30 feet of water. They are hitting wax worms and spikes on any bright jig you drop down. They are running 10 to 12 inches in length. Any significant warm-up will make 10 inches of ice disappear fast, so pay attention to the weather. Currently, it’s go get the “slammer perch” conditions. If we can keep the ice… this year will be as exciting as last year’s phenomenal season. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  10. Streams-There are a few openings in Maxwell Creek, however stream fishing that creek is difficult. If we have a thaw, the steelhead fishing will be excellent this time of year. Bays-Currently, there is still solid ice on all the bays. A few inches were lost during last week’s warm-up; however, Sodus and Port Bays have 8 plus inches of black ice. Hopefully today’s snow fall will blow-off the bays. Tomorrow we have another round a gale force wind. That’ll blow off snow but will make ice fishing a chore. The perch fishing continues to be excellent. Last Saturday there were hundreds of shanties on the bays, reeling in 10 to 12-inch perch. The Saturday before the Super Bowl there were over 500 shanties on Sodus Bay. Make sure you don’t leave anything behind when you finish for the day. That includes on the ice as well as next to your vehicle. Take in-take out is the theme while ice fishing. The productive areas are still off the points; however, the perch appear to be everywhere. They are hitting bright jigs tipped with perch eyes or spike. Or you can use tip-ups with minnows. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  11. Streams-All streams are still frozen over and they haven’t really opened-up …even with 60-degree temps. Bays-Yesterday the temperatures hit 62 degrees, and the past few nights have been in the 50’s. However, that hasn’t really melted much ice. Port Bay still has a solid ten inches and Sodus Bay has the same. There are soft areas near docks and near the channels, however the ice remains safe. Predicted rain later this week could change the thickness, but as of today most ice is safe. The perch are hitting off the points in Port Bay and seem to be gobbling-up spikes. Use bright jigs and perch minnows under tip-ups are working well. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  12. Streams-All streams are frozen over and they certainly won’t thaw this week. Temps will be single digits. Bays-All of Sodus Bay has 8 plus inches. There is snow cover on most sections of the bay. The going is tough getting to the hotspot. There are machines on the ice…just beware of the dock bubblers. Not too many are fishing the south end, probably because of the slushy top. All that will change when temperatures drop to “zero” on Thursday. They are catching jumbo perch over by the loop and at the trestle near the old malt house. The perch are hitting bright jigs and the smaller lures seem to be working better. They are also catching perch out from Third Creek near Shaker Heights Road. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  13. Streams-The streams are covered with ice, however warmer temps and rain predicted for tomorrow might open them up. There are sections of Maxwell ice-free, however it is a small stream so it’s probably difficult to cast out egg sacs. Bays-Last Saturday there were record numbers of ice anglers on the bays. Counting shanties just out from Third Creek on Sodus Bay, the numbers were in the hundreds. It was the same scenario at the loop at Sodus Point and near the old trestle area near the old malt house. The ice was 6 to 8 inches before the storm Saturday night, however the frigid temperatures yesterday would be making another 4 to 6 inches. The jumbo perch are between 10 and 12 inches. They are hitting everything, however the reports from anglers seem to be that the perch are preferring smaller jigs. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  14. Streams-Egg sacs and bright colored beads are catching steelhead from Maxwell Creek. The water flow is perfect, and the fish are coming from both sides of Lake Road. The little Salmon Creek in Pultneyville also has a nice run of winter steelies. All of the smaller streams in the county have an excellent flow of water. Bays-All the bays are locked-in with an ice cover, which means the wind can’t stop ice making. Of course, first ice is very unpredictable…just like last ice. Where ever you choose to fish, start walking with a spud in your hand. Spud for ice safety. It’s the best tool when it’s first ice. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  15. Streams-Stream fishing has been fairly consistent with steelhead coming from Maxwell and Salmon Creek. The water flow is excellent; however, the wind is once again picking up and snow is on the way. The anglers fishing are using the usual bright lures to attract the steelies, and egg sacs. Some browns are being caught but January is a steelhead fishery in the streams. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  16. Streams-The steelhead fishing in Maxwell Creek was great over the holiday. It can be hot and cold, however the last few days have been very productive for steelies. Egg sacs, bright beads, flies, and small red spoons have all worked. Both sides of Lake Road work. There is plenty of parking and the flow is excellent. Salmon Creek in Pultneyville and Bear Creek in Ontario also have steelhead. The Sodus Bay Pier didn’t have any ice build-up towards the south end, and now that the winds have calmed you can cast off the pier. Use small bright glow Little Cleos. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  17. Streams-Tis the day after Christmas and all through my house, not a creature is stirring, except my one resident mouse. If you received some flies or small spoons for Christmas, try throwing them out in Maxwell Creek. The water flow is perfect for this time of year and there is no ice build-up along the shoreline. Later this week it might hit the 50’s which only means you don’t need a bunch of layers to stay warm. There are some steelhead coming from Maxwell…on the south side of lake road. They are skittish, however will hit bright red beads or egg sacs. The smaller creeks along Lake Road also have fish and Salmon Creek in Pultneyville had some anglers fishing near the bridge. I’m not sure what they were catching. Bays-There was open water at the north end of Port Bay a few days ago, so if you still are using your boat, that’s a good place to launch. You can also launch at the Coast Guard Station at Sodus Bay, however the day after Christmas is the second half of the waterfowl season, so any open water at that section of Sodus Bay will have duck hunters. Obviously, you need to be very careful if you are fishing from a boat this time of year. Wear your PFD and remember hypothermia is deadly. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  18. Streams-The snow is gone, and the temps were in the 40’s yesterday…then a cold front passed through. Currently, the temps are in the mid-20’s with no lake effect snow yet. The streams have a great flow and some anglers were catching steelhead in Maxwell over the weekend. The trout are in the streams, however it’s the busiest season in the year, so fishing is not on the agenda for the casting or fly angler. If you do get a chance, throw out egg sacs, imitation eggs, beads or any bright small jigs for the browns or steelhead. Fish both sides of Lake Road at Maxwell Creek. Bays-Some perch anglers were able to launch their boats at the north end of Port Bay. The fish were off the points in 20 feet of water. It was tough fishing and a lot of moving around was necessary to catch some decent size perch. Sodus Bay at the south end is skimmed over with ice, however you can still launch your boat at the Coast Guard station at Sodus Point. Obviously, you need to be very careful if you are fishing from a boat this time of year. Wear your PFD and remember hypothermia is deadly. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  19. Streams-Streams fishing has been hot and cold. Maxwell is flowing and there are some browns being caught. A few steelhead are also hitting egg sacs, and that’s a good thing. Water flow is perfect, and the shoreline of Maxwell is ice free. That could change overnight, however today the temps are in the mid-30’s. Pier fishing is difficult at the end of the Sodus Bay; however, you can still cast out next to the Coast Guard station. Use Kastmasters and Cleos. Use the Little Cleo Glows. They are great spoons to cast and they catch trout. Bays-Starting November 1st you need to be wearing a PFD while in your boat. You need to wear it…not just have it on your boat. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  20. Streams-The streams have a strong water flow which has made fishing difficult. There has been some steelhead caught in Maxwell Creek on the south side of Lake Road, and some browns on the slower moving north side. Anglers are throwing out egg sacs and bright beads. Currently there is no snow buildup, however that can change quickly when you border Lake Ontario. Steelhead fishing is usually the best in January if the streams in Wayne County don’t freeze over. Bays-Starting November 1s you need to be wearing a PFD while in your boat. You need to wear it…not just have it on your boat. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  21. Streams-Some anglers from Massachusetts were fly fishing area streams two days ago and caught some late season browns and a few salmon. They make the trip every year to catch trout and salmon in Maxwell Creek. They said they tie their own flies. You can also catch some browns by throwing out egg sacs and small spoons. The flow in area streams is borderline flooding. When it rains it pores…is the weather pattern in Wayne County. All the streams are flowing, something we begged for a month ago. Bays-Starting November 1s you need to be wearing a PFD while in your boat. You need to wear it…not just have it on your boat. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  22. Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble-Gobble! Streams- There were some souls fishing Maxwell Creek on the south side of Lake Road a few days ago. The word was slow fishing; however, a few browns were caught on the slower north side. Driving Lake Road to Rochester, anglers were observed fishing many of the tribs. No idea how they made out. The salmon run is over, however hold-over browns can be caught with egg sacs and bright beads. Water flow is excellent and currently the shoreline doesn’t have much snow. Bays- Starting November 1st you need to be wearing a PFD while in your boat. You need to wear it…not just have it on your boat. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  23. Streams- The streams are flowing; however, the salmon run is slowing down… not completely over yet. There have been some browns coming out of Maxwell and Salmon Creek in Pultneyville. They are hitting egg sacs and green beads. Some browns hit Cleos off the Port Bay pier and channel, however the 40-mph northwest wind from the weekend could have closed the channel opening. Sodus Bay pier fishing has also been impossible with the constant wind. Predicted snow fall and cold temperatures will be an end to casting off the pier. If it doesn’t ice-up, try your luck casting out for browns and possibly some steelhead. Bays- Starting November 1st you need to be wearing a PFD while in your boat. You need to wear it…not just have it on your boat. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  24. Streams- The south side of Maxwell has an excellent flow and some stream anglers were catching salmon. There have also been browns caught on the slower section on the north side of Lake Road. With rain predicted all week all the streams in the county will be flowing. They could end-up flowing a little too much, however we’ll take it. It’s much better than a month ago! It’s been hit or miss from the Sodus Bay pier. The fish are in the channel; however, they are hitting sporadically. Use heavy spoons…especially the glow Cleos. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
  25. Streams- Maxwell Creek is finally flowing. It has been raining every day except today, so we finally have some water movement in our streams. There were anglers fishing the south end of the creek this afternoon. There were some salmon hitting in Salmon Creek in Pultneyville. They were hitting eggs sacs. It’s supposed to rain the rest of the week, which is great for the streams and not so great for the leaf-peepers. Click here to see the rest of this report on ILoveNYFishing.com.
