  1. Wayne County Fishing Report This report was written by Chris Kenyon on October 31, 2017. Lake Ontario- There are browns close to shore for anyone that wants to fish the lake. Yesterday’s blow will certainly change where they are, however when the lake calms-down you can still catch BT’s. Streams-Five inches of rain has the streams in Wayne County flooding. When the water level subsides, the stream action will be phenomenal. The run will continue with the browns following the salmon in the tribs eating the delicious eggs. Maxwell was hot last week with some big kings hitting beads, egg sacs, and small spoons. You can fish both sides of Lake Road. The stream is small, however during mid-week you can find spots to cast. There is plenty of parking on both sides of Lake Road. Bays- The perch are hitting at Sodus Bay. You can find them off the loop at Sodus Point or on the west side of the bay near Arney’s Marina. The perch are hitting minnows and artificial rubber (2inch) with spikes. The crappies are in Port Bay and although many are smaller than the 9-inch limit, there are still some nice keepers. Crappies are suspended and will hit anything that is bright. Just keep your jigs small. You can use your ice fishing jigs for autumn crappies. Don’t forget you need to wear a PFD starting tomorrow, the first day of November. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops. www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- Autumn fishing the canal usually consist of largemouths, crappies, bluegills and some perch. The bass are five pounds plus near Widewaters. This report was written by Chris Kenyon of Wolcott, NY, a regular columnist with the Finger Lakes Times, Sun and Record, Lake Ontario Outdoors and freelance writer with other publications, as well as Recreational Promotional Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. Chris assists with the Wayne County Youth Derby and other outdoor events. He also takes time to work with the Montezuma Audobon Center on programs involving kids, including their Youth Pheasant Hunt. 2. Wayne County Fishing Report for October 24, 2017 Lake Ontario- You can still catch some salmon close to shore near Maxwell Creek and the channel at Sodus Point. Most charter captains have wrapped-up their season for trout and salmon, however some of the smaller boats are still fishing the lake. They are catching some silver fish out in 300 feet of water. Streams- A brief rainfall last night has put some more water in Maxwell. Anglers are catching salmon and browns on both sides of Lake Road. The browns are on the north side where the current is slower. Egg sacs, beads, flies and small spoons all have caught fish. Fishing during mid-week is always less crowded. You can also fish the piers with Sodus Point producing some nice kings. Hughes’ Marina is another option for trout and salmon. The marina is located one mile east of Pultneyville on Lake Road. You’ll see the signs on the road. Bays- Bay fishing has been the best in years with action on Port, Sodus, and Blind Sodus Bays. The perch are everywhere, and crappies and blue gills are also hitting. You can use minnows or artificial bait tipped with spikes. Surface water temps are in the high 50’s which is a little warm for late October fishing. Look for the drop-offs and move around if you are catching smaller fish. The perch and crappies have been mixed ages with plenty year-of-class, which is always a good sign for future catches. Don’t forget you need to wear a PFD the end of this month. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops. www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- Largemouth bass are hitting near Port Gibson and near Lyons anglers are catching bluegills. This report was written by Chris Kenyon of Wolcott, NY, a regular columnist with the Finger Lakes Times, Sun and Record, Lake Ontario Outdoors and freelance writer with other publications, as well as Recreational Promotional Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. 3. Wayne County Fishing Report for October 18, 2017 Lake Ontario- There still a little action in the lake with some browns close to shore following the salmon in the streams and bays. Your best bet is to cast off the piers… Sodus and Port Bay. Although Port Bay has a small channel the salmon really don’t care. Streams- The run is on!! Maxwell Creek has been hot with late salmon and brown trout. You should fish both sides of Lake Road. The north side is slow moving water and the south is fast. Like every year the best bait for the browns is egg sacs, artificial or the real eggs. Where ever water dumps into the lake you’ll find trout and salmon. Bays- The perch fishing in Sodus Bay has picked-up since last week. Concentrate on the drop-offs and also fish near the channel. Use small jigs tipped with spikes or go with minnows. The crappies are hitting in Port Bay; however, many are smaller than the 9-inch limit. Crappies are suspended. Don’t forget you need to wear a PFD the end of this month. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops. www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- The kayak anglers were out in the Widewaters catching bass. If you enjoy kayaking you can launch just about anywhere along the canal. October is the best month for extra hefty largemouth bass. This report was written by Chris Kenyon of Wolcott, NY, a regular columnist with the Finger Lakes Times, Sun and Record, Lake Ontario Outdoors and freelance writer with other publications, as well as Recreational Promotional Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. 4. Wayne County Fishing Report for October 10, 2017 Lake Ontario- While fishing Port Bay for perch and crappies last week, the salmon were rolling around everywhere. This is a great time to fish the pier heads at Port and Sodus Bays. Yesterday’s rain has created a surge of salmon for the autumn run. There are a few charters fishing in 400 feet of water, looking for young kings and steelhead. They are using spoons off the riggers. Little Cleo’s and Kastmasters are great spoons for casting in the Sodus Bay channel waters. The rainfall, which was three inches in some places, has created a decent flow in the streams. Anglers were catching kings in Salmon Creek in Pultneyville and there is probably a decent run at Maxwell. No reports from Maxwell, however the rainfall should make Maxwell come alive. Bays- The perch fishing in Port and Sodus Bays has slowed considerably. They must be moving around because it has been a fantastic autumn for perch and crappies. Fish the drop-offs with artificial minnows. Use the two-inch variety with a sinker tied five inches below. There is a great population of crappies in Port Bay, however they are small, not nine inches which is the size limit. Don’t forget you need to wear a PFD the end of this month. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops. www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- Largemouth bass are hitting at Widewaters and near Lyons, next to the locks. There are pull-off places to fish along Route 31 if you don’t have a boat. 5. Wayne County Fishing Repot for October 3, 2017 Lake Ontario- They’re still catching kings in the lake. Try 100 feet for starters and use spoons. The salmon were porpoising near the Fair Haven channel yesterday, so I’m sure there is some action at the Sodus Bay channel. Straight out from Hughes’s Marina has also produced some late season kings. There is really nothing happening in the streams yet, although a steady rain will start the run. Some browns were caught close to shore near Maxwell Creek. Speaking of Hughes’ there was a 7-pound smallmouth caught using a minnow out from the marina. Check the tourism Facebook for a picture. Bays- Sodus Bay and Port Bay have been producing perch, some reaching 12 to 13 inches. Use artificial minnows, two inches. The perch are schooling near the points. So far, it’s been a great season for autumn perch. The largemouths are feeding along the weedlines of Sodus, Port, and Blind Sodus Bays. Catch them with Zoom bait or spinner baits. Don’t forget you need to wear a PFD the end of this month. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shop: www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- Canal fishing is excellent. Fishing the canal always produces the entire year. Anglers are still catching crappies near Port Gibson, which is part of the Widewaters. Largemouth are hitting along the south side of the canal. 6. Wayne County Fishing Report for September 26, 2017 Tuesday, September 26, 2017 Lake Ontario- The kings are staging and although they are not the brilliant silver of summer, they do give a fight. Out from Sodus it’s been an early bite. Try 90 to 100 feet of water and use flasher flies. Riggers are at 10 feet and the dipsy back 250 has worked. Some guys are using cut bait and spoons still work. Yesterday was 88 degrees and today is another sultry day on Lake Ontario. A front is coming later this week, so that might change the late season bite. Bays- Bay fishing has been excellent. The Sodus Bay perch are still hitting in 20 to 25 feet of water near the islands and on the south-east side of the bay. There have been some 10 to 12 inchers. Port Bay has some terrific bass fishing. The largemouths are hitting just about anything you throw at them. Fish the coves and the southern end of the bay. There is also a crappie bite at Port Bay…at the south-east end of the bay. They have been rather small but still big enough to keep (nine-inch regulation). Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops. www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- The canal still offers some of the best fishing in the county. It has all fish except trout and salmon. The bass are weighing-in at five pounds plus. 7. Wayne County Fishing Report for September 13, 2017 September 13, 2017 Lake Ontario- Kings are hitting in 50 to 100 feet of water. Today’s south breeze might be pushing temps around; however, the fish appear to be stacking-up. Riggers and dipsey divers appear to be the preferred presentation with flasher flies and stick baits working. Green ladder back are the colors for the sticks. The catch has been kings, browns and some cohos straight out from Sodus and Hughes’ Marina. So far there is nothing much happening in the tribs. Bays- The Sodus Bay perch are on the bite. Fish the east side of the bay starting at the south end and going north to the islands. If there is no action move around until you locate the schools. So far, they have been only males. The largemouths are striking in Port Bay and you can launch at the north end. Now that the water level is lower the no wake regulation has been lifted. You still need to only go 5 miles an hour 300 feet from shore. Crappie’s are in Port Bay suspended at the south end. They must be 9 inches to keep. Use bright jigs tipped with spikes. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops. www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- Fishing has been very good for canal largemouths. Launch at Widewaters. There are also crappies being caught west of Clyde. There is also a ramp just east of Clyde as soon as you cross the bridge on Route 414. This report was written by Chris Kenyon of Wolcott, NY, a regular columnist with the Finger Lakes Times, Sun and Record, Lake Ontario Outdoors and freelance writer with other publications, as well as Recreational Promotional Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. 8. Wayne County Fishing Update for September 5, 2017 Written by Chris Kenyon Lake Ontario- Wayne County fish held their own during the LOC Fall Derby. The Grand Prize 39 pounder was caught last week, straight-out from Sodus Bay. There were also two other kings in the top twenty that came from Wayne County waters. Almost $40,000 was given away for anglers catching our fish. Currently, the fishing is great. The LOC is now history, however the kings are still swimming around. They have been in 70 to 100 feet of water and hitting cut bait, spoons and flasher flies. They are biting the flies, but don’t forget to use the meat rigs. Riggers are down 50 to 70 feet and dipsys are out 250 feet. The browns have been closer to shore in 70 feet of water and hitting cut bait. If you prefer the smaller variety, the perch are schooling 12 to 20 feet of water. They are showing up on the screen as bait pods. Use small grubs (2 inch) with paddle tails. Rig your number four hook 30 inches above the sinker. The gobies really don’t like coming off the bottom. Bays- All the wake limits have been removed off the bays. Both the north and south end ramps at Port Bay are open. The holiday is over; however, autumn is the time to do some serious fishing. The crappies are in Port Bay. They tend to be a little on the small side. Remember there is a 9-inch size regulation for crappies. Use small bright jigs and fish over 10 feet of water, down 4 feet. They usually suspend in the water column. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops at www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- Canal fishing was busy over the weekend with largemouth catches near Newark and Palmyra. The bass are on the bite and hitting just about anything you throw them. 9. Wayne County Fishing Report for August 29, 2017 Have a Safe Labor Day Lake Ontario- Another 34-pound king made the recent LOC leaderboard. This was caught north of Fair Haven Bay. The bite is on and the kings are staging…well somewhat. They have been in water from 150 to 400, so I guess that’s not staging. Look for the bait is the advice from most anglers fishing the LOC. Copper out 450 feet is hot with cut bait. Flasher flies are also working off the dipsy divers and spoons off the riggers. The set-ups haven’t really changed. You just need to pick away and hope for a 35-pound king. Straight out from Hughes and Sodus Bay is a great starting point. If you think you have a leading fish, weigh it at Davenports Bait Shop, Hughes’ Marina, Bay Bridge Sport Shop, or B-E Fishing in Ontario. The smallmouth bass are still hitting in 20 to 30 feet of water. Try out from East Bay, just east of Chimney Bluff. Make sure your hook is 30 inches above the sinker. That way you are eliminated the pesky bait stealing gobies. The bass have been in the 5-pound class and there have been smaller ones, which is a good sign for year of class populations. Bays- Largemouth bass fishing has been hot on Sodus Bay. Just fish the weedlines, throwing out any rig you have. There have been some smallmouths caught near the Sodus channel using minnows. There are crappies in Port Bay, however they are small. Some smallmouths are in the Port Bay channel. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops. www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal- There was a bass tournament on the canal this past Sunday. The boats started from Widewaters and worked the shoreline where the canal narrows. The bass were everywhere and they were hitting top-water bait and Zoom worms. Five-pound bass are the norm for the Erie/Barge Canal. This report was provided by Chris Kenyon of Wolcott, NY, a regular columnist with the Finger Lakes Times, Sun and Record, Lake Ontario Outdoors and freelance writer with other publications, as well as Recreational Promotional Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. Chris assists with the Wayne County Youth Derby and other outdoor events. He also takes time to work with the Montezuma Audobon Center on programs involving kids, including their Youth Pheasant Hunt. Kenyon is a tireless advocate for enjoying the outdoors, preserving the environment, and sharing knowledge and skills.
  10. Wayne County Fishing Update for August 22, 2017 Lake Ontario - A 34-pound king is leading the LOC Fall Derby and that’s just the beginning. The iconic Lake Ontario contest runs through Labor Day. The anglers are catching kings all along the southern shores of the “Big O”. In Wayne County, start in 100 fow and work it to 150, fishing 80 to 90 feet down. Everything is working: spoons, flasher/flies, and cut bait. The kings are coming off copper, riggers, and dips divers. If you think you have a leading fish, weigh it at Hughes’ Marina, Bay Bridge Sport Shop, or B-E Fishing in Ontario. With the fantastic fishing, the LOC leaderboard should be dominated with some Wayne County kings. Don’t make the mistake of fishing and not signing up for the derby. An exciting development is happening on Lake Ontario. Wayne County waters are now holding smallmouth bass. After a few years of no bass, the smallies are coming back and they are weighing close to five pounds because they are gobbling up gobies. They have been in 25 to 30 feet of water straight out from Sodus and Port Bays. Use artificial minnows tipped with spikes and place your hook 18 inches above the sinker. That will help you avoid the bottom feeding bait stealing gobies. Bays - Largemouth bass fishing has been hot on Sodus Bay. Just fish the weedlines, throwing out any rig you have. There have been some smallmouths caught near the Sodus channel using minnows. Crappies have been suspended near the south end of Sodus. Fish the edge of the heavy weedline and use bright small jigs tipped with spikes. The crappies are down three feet over eight feet of water. The heavy weeds between LeRoy and Newark Island have been the perfect habitat for pike. Fish the four to five-foot water using pike minnows or troll with spoons. Use weedless lures. The no wake conditions remain on all Wayne County bays, so that will make getting to your preferred location very difficult. It sounds like a broken record, however, the speed on the bays is still idle. It’s a Wayne County Emergency condition. Check out the rest of the Wayne County Tourism web page for the locations and hours of local bait and tackle shops at www.waynecountytourism.com. Erie Canal - The warm canal waters are producing some nice catfish near Palmyra, while the bass fishing is excellent in the Widewaters section. Fish from the shore if you don’t have a boat. This report was provided by Chris Kenyon of Wolcott, NY - a regular columnist with the Finger Lakes Times, Sun and Record, Lake Ontario Outdoors and freelance writer with other publications, as well as Recreational Promotional Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. Chris assists with the Wayne County Youth Derby and other outdoor events. He also takes time to work with the Montezuma Audobon Center on programs involving kids, including their Youth Pheasant Hunt.
