Cannon Mag 5 ST Issue, Need Some Help

Recommended Posts

My rigger will lower the ball but it won't bring the ball back up. I took the toggle switch out and put it in my working rigger (another Cannon Mag 5 ST) and the toggle switch works.

The toggle switch in the broken rigger will make an audible click when I try to raise the ball, but that's all it does. What might be the problem since it's not the toggle switch?

Todd, not sure how new they are so your not monkeying with a warranty deal, if that’s not an issue, you could try also swapping boards to see if the problem follows. If it’s not that, check to see if there’s any grounding issues on that particular rigger.

It's from 2011, so warranty isn't an issue. I'll start swapping internal parts until I find the culprit. It's the best way to save money and not buy something I don't need. Thanks!

I have to add that these riggers are so clean inside, they look like they were made yesterday. No water intrusion, and no evidence of moisture or anything. It's odd that the rigger worked just fine last year, and now it doesn't. They are stored in my house during the winter months, along with all of my electronics.

You have described it well.  Relay clicks but nothing happens.  Been there done that many times.  Change the short stop board.  Relay contacts are burned.  Don't waste anymore time on trying other solutions. Can't easily change the relay on the board.  It is epoxied in over the solder joints.  Boards are available from Cannon and some other places.

I've already priced a new board on the Cannon web site. Thanks!

In addition, I don't know why Cannon doesn't wise up and put  30  Or higher amp relays in there.  10 amp or so relays are destined to fail. The inrush current when that motor initially starts is typically 3 or 4 times that.  Cannon needs to re evaluate their engineering staff.

I have replaced about 6 of those boards for friends and myself. Some only 2 years old.  Tried to remove the relay on one but that was a mess, ruined the trace on the board.  Next time I am going to cut the top off the relay, rip out the contents, solder wires to the terminals of the relay internally,  put the wires on a relay socket.  Than a 30 amp relay in the socket and it will be easily replaceable.  I may need some bad boards so please save yours for future use.

Todd, I have a board that was new if you can’t get one soon enough. Just have to go find it.

Thanks for the offer! I can't order one until Monday anyway, so I'd be interested in taking it off your hands if you can find it.

i bought 3 new Cannons around that same time and had issues with all three, boards blowing and plug connections failing.  Cannon would replace the boards but would be out a rigger while getting it fixed.  These newer high speed riggers draw a lot of power i felt the wiring was not sized properly so i replaced all the wiring with heavier wire from the battery all the way into the the housing to the connections and made special adapters for the larger cord grip to seal where it goes through the rigger housing.  I have NEVER blown another board again, trouble free for at least 10 to 12 yrs now.  The original cannon cords/harnesses went to the garbage and my rigger headaches went away but the time and money spent on heavier cord was worth it.

That's a good idea! I have heavier gauge wire in my garage, leftover from my boat re-wiring projects.

Would be glad to take all the "donor"boards off your hands to experiment with if you are in the Mexico bay area. I am on Sandy Pond and get up to Watertown regularly.

If my board turns out to be bad, then you are welcome to it.

I changed out the board yesterday and now the rigger works. The "broken" board looks brand new, can't see anything wrong with it, so I don't know why it stopped working. I'll call Cannon today to ask if I can exchange it for a new board. Highly doubtful, but it's worth a try.
