I put 30# mono on first then the wire to fill it. It’s not fully filled if you don’t and you may get incorrect line counter readings. Btw, I have no clue how much mono I put on. Sorry.

I get both answers, only have 2 1000 foot spools so, hoping to get it right:-)

I found a post from Legacy where he recommends 200' of mono for a Okuma 30 size reel, which should be similar, and there's some folks who say that the mono will help "soften" the pressure against the spool. It may also reduce slippage. I did however also find this old thread specifically regarding Saltist 30 reels and wire from 12 years ago (where I posted!):

Hence, it's possible that either answer will suffice and it's a flip of a coin thing.

Here's an idea. Put the wire onto one reel first, then fill it to where you're comfortable with mono, paying attention to how much you use. Then transfer it between reels to the second one, mono first. Make sure to put on the pressure as you spool the wire so that it doesn't bind on itself under the blistering run of a big king! And let us know how much mono it takes.

Depending on the wire you use, you may need a little.  I use Malin 7 strand and it fits perfect with no backing.

I have 4 Okuma 30 size reels for my wire rods.

2 have 1000’ 30lb Blood Run wire with 350’ of 50lb braid backer.

2 have 1000’ AFW 30lb wire with 300’ of 65lb braid backer.

I take notes on what spool up for each rod so I don’t have to guess every time I fill a reel.

Any links to that wire? What backing/how much? Thanks

AFW 30lb can be found here at FishUSA. I use the two reel method for figuring out backing. Spool on the wire and then fill reel with backing. Take a second reel and zero the counter. Reel on the backing and note the counter number once it's on the reel. Continue to reel on the 1000' of wire. On your empty reel use the data you got from the first to determine where to stop with the braid.
