Wire on rod eyes

Recommended Posts

I run wire on the yellow Eagle Claw 8' rods with Twillie Tips. I noticed there are grooves cut in the eyes. Does that get bad enough that they have to be fixed, or does it level out?

Or do I have new rods in my future?

Depends on how many are cut, but yes you will need to repair them eventually. A relative let his go years ago and they cut right through the guide. I have not found a good way to run wire without cutting the eyes, short of buying the roller guide rods. And I'm not shelling out that much for rods.

Mildrum Corporation mfgs a carboloy all metal guide which works quite well with copper wire. I replaced all the guides on Tony Buffa's Charters rods and he has had great luck with them. The cost of each guide are much less than AFTCO or Pac Bay Roller guides. Pricing ranges between $2.00 and $6.00 per guide. Check out Mudhole Rod Components for those products.
