Wind Turbines on Lake Ontario!

Recommended Posts

It's true. The Town of Hounsfield approved the site project for Galoo Island. The board said thre was no opposition from the residents of the Town of Hounsfield, only from outsiders. Sounds like BS to me. This whole deal stinks, there is money changing hands somewhere along the line. The preserve the golden crescent website has been putting the word out on this for some time. That there was no opposition is totally false. I personally called the phone # supplied and voiced my opposition , and I am willing to bet there were hundreds of like calls. This is the start of the huge wind farm in Mexico Bay . The Galoo project will need power lines and they are ready to use emminent domain to get the property they need to run these lines. The request for the transmission lines asks for carrying capacity four times what the Galoo project will produce. What does that tell us ?I think we may be fighting a losing battle.

This is all interesting, saying the Galloo project has been approved. I got word that it's been stalled due to opposition. Was mentioned in the Watertown Daily Times, and if the opposition causes it to be delayed long enough, the project will lose out on the stimulus funding.

Things have gotten ominously quiet. The last I have heard is the plan has been sent back to Jefferson County to hash out the PILOT agreement (after the Town of Hounsfield approved the site plan clearing the way for the pilot) . I have been going to the www.preservethegoldencrescent.com website daily to keep up with events. They have the sites proposed for turbines on Galoo and the site plan for transmission lines on their website and what I have seen is very disturbing. They also have a petition to Jefferson County opposing the project , please visit and sign . It seems that NY power authority and the downstate developer have gone to ground and are keeping things quiet. The Galoo project is slated to start this summer and the rest of the project within 2 years.

A pickpocket uses stealth & deception as basic tools of his trade.

Curiously similar to what's going on here don't you think?

The folks who have NOT written their representatives will one day wake up and say wtf happened?

They/We need to get a marine biologist and animal habitat specialists involved. If they install these windmills what damage will in have on the native animals, face it they out rank humans on a protection issue. California has had wind mills in the desert for 20 plus years and are trying to put in more but I believe the desert tourtise is holding up that expantion. So with that in mind, Will the fishery in Lake O be disrupted? I think yes. Will they cause a impact to a land mammel's habitat? I think yes. Will it effect the natural beauty of the land scape? You bet. So use thier own systems against them, There should be an enviormental impact study someplace for this project. We need to find it and question it's findings.

Just my 2 cents.

Something to think about.... If windmills are erected on the southest part of L.O.

There will be under water power lines going from windmill to windmill and to the power plant.

They will definitely give off magnetism .........................................

It does effect fish

Salmon river hatchery, god knows what will happen.

Google search: magnetism and fish

NOISE:

The windmills will give off noise. Forget about staying in campsites and homes along the lake. You know that you can hear a boat coming miles away on the water. Only thing this will be constant, sound carries over water faster and louder than on land. Camp grounds will be empty and fish will be gone.

Environmental Impact study for Houndsfield/Galloo Island:

http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu83R1FRLe ... dfteis.pdf

The developers recognize that fish will be harmed during construction and their plan for mitigation is to blast only when significant spawning is not occurring. This construction is why I mention the sediments & the USEPA's Area of Concern for the Rochester Embayment.

Magnetism and freshwater fish:

http://www.ursi.org/Proceedings/ProcGA0 ... /p0842.pdf

Basically the fish become very sluggish & align themselves with the magnetic field. Transmission Lines are generally 33KV and .3 to .5 Hz (extremely low freguency - which is why I drew the comparision to the pulsed DC that the Army Corps is using to try to stop the asian carp)

I thought I posted both of these before. I apologize if I hadn’t.

The point on noise is correct. However amplitude and speed of sound IN water is even higher & noises will be conducted through the tower right into the water. There will be a very low frequency noise emitted which may be very similar to fish movement.

I started reading through sections of the Hounsfield Impact Report, and it is VERY disturbing. Regardless of when they do the blasting, they do recognize there is the risk of major fish deaths due to the blasts. Some sections acknowledge the aquatic life will be destroyed, but "it will regrow soon after the blasting". Someone obviously did a lot of research on the impact of putting these pinwheels in and the facts are there in black and white. Why are these politicians not recognizing this and accepting the impact to the Lake, fishery and aquatic life WILL be catastrophic? Oh, that's right...they're only in it for the money!!!

Write your local representatives!!! I did and have gotten replies from him directly. My rep is 100% against this and has promised me he will do everything in his power to stop this project from happening...not just to the Mexico Bay area, but lake-wide!

For anyone interested in attending, there will be a special meeting held in Pulaski regarding the windfarm issues. The meeting will be held this Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Pulaski Court House from 10am-12pm. All parties are strongly encouraged to attend. There is strong opposition to the farms from the residents to the north in Jefferson County, and this meeting will help to strengthen the opposition to the windfarms. Again, everyone is encouraged to attend, if at all possible. Homeowners, fishermen, charter captains, anyone!!!

Not sure if this is good or bad, but here is a response from Senator George D. Maziarz:

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your e-mail of last month. I represent a significant portion of Lake Ontario shoreline and I was recently named Chairman of the Senate Energy Committee. As such, our region has a vested interest in the fate of NYPA’s Great Lakes Offshore Wind Project so I have been studying it very carefully and I am continuing to do so. Many concerns about this project’s implementation and after effects have been conveyed to me and you are right in pointing out additional factors to consider. I will gladly keep your comments in mind, and please know that I will continue to try to protect our freshwater resources.

Thanks again, and if you have any additional thoughts, please do not hesitate to share them with me.

Sincerely,

George D. Maziarz

Senator, 62nd District

Got the same exact letter YT. I think he is very aware now. Let's hope that the link to this thread I gave him will keep his attention. There are a lot more opinions and knowledgeable debate to be added here still. Keep up the good work guys.

PULASKI -- Opposition to a proposed wind turbine farm on Galoo Island is growing.

Residents in the Town of Pulaski have concerns that transmission lines from the the 230 kilowatt line would spoil the scenic views in the village and lower property values. Oswego County Legislator Shawn Doyle says the 150 foot tall transmission towers would ruin one of the area's most historic and scenic villages. "It will be the first thing you see when you come into the village of Pulaski - it will be a huge visual disruption," says Doyle.

Upstate New York Power Corporation has submitted an application for a 50.6 mile transmission facility that would run from Galloo Island in the town of Hounsfield, Jefferson County, through the towns of Henderson, Ellisburg, Sandy Creek and Richland and the village of Pulaski to a proposed substation and interconnection with existing transmission lines in Mexico.

Doyle says the transmission lines would run alongside the village and have a negative impact on the regions growing tourism industry. "People come from all over the world to go to the Salmon River. It is absolutely beautiful. The power lines will be seen far and wide and they will totally disrupt that view," Doyle says.

A coalition of groups with concerns about the project will meet at the courthouse in Pulaski at 10:00 Saturday morning to discuss the issue.

I just came accross an article from the local Plattsburgh , NY news. The NY state court of appeals has rejected a move by the local neighborhood group to block a wind permit. The local laws prohibit the building of wind projects in residential areas , but the judge has approved the issuing of the permit while admitting it is illegal.

Penn energy ( I believe the same company responsible for the plans on LO ) said their team remains prepared to oppose "frivolous actions" brought by neighborhood groups. It appears this company has a huge legal team to fight us. The article can be read at http://www.pressrepublican.com , click on news at the top of the page and scroll down to article.

Any one able to attend the meeting in Pulaski at 10 AM , please post the results so we can all keep up with developments.

Here's the direct link as-well: http://www.pressrepublican.com/0100_new ... 32654.html
