I've been maintaining the "stealth" of copper reading all of your posts, but time to make a splash. No one has commented on what rod/reel combo they like to use for this setup. I would really like to add one to the arsenal this year. As always, your comments are truly appreciated by this novice and I'm sure others.

The only reel that I know of that will handle a 600 copper with enough backing is a Penn 345. I have my 600 on that reel. All my shorter lengths are on Tekotas. I think the rod choice would be based on what you are fishing for. In the finger lakes a medium to heavy rod would work fine as long as the guides let the swivels through. On Lake O I would recommend a heavy rod.

I primarly fish muskie but am planning some Lake Ontario trout and salmon fishing this coming season. Put my 20 year old downriggers back to work. I have been lurking on the site for some time.

Why Copper? What is the difference to steel line ( wire)

Copper is heavier then wire. From what I've been reading every 100' of copper will take your bait down 20'-22' (600' down 120'-130')
