Jigging for Lakers

I happened to catch a TV show recently whereby the host and guest were nailing lakers on Lake Michigan in early spring using jigs. They offered some good tips and this sounds like an interesting approach. Has anyone out there tried this? Where? Another show featured the anglers casting sticks for trout and salmon (and catching them, of course). The notion of having the rod in one's hands when the fish strike sounds very appealing. Does anyone out there employ this tactic?

They jig for lakers at the Niagara bar. I believe Prime time Pete won the LOC years back doing this.

I have caught browns, bows and salmon casting from piers and I have seen guys that cast from their boats along the break wall at Oswego.

Watch for the ice boom removal which will kill the bar for a week, but yes jigging is done by a select few near the green can off the mouth of the Niagara. Large white, chart., yellow, orange or glow jig heads tipped with minnows work best. Light action spinning gear....fun fun fun. Keep it near the bottom with gentle tingling of the rod as you drift. Right now there are enough fish from Olcott to Wilson that you could jig for them......easy.
