Salted Minnows

Here is how we have done it for fifty years, before the VHS rules that limit your use of salted minutes.

Drain the minnows in a collander and then spread them out on some newspaper to soak off more moisture. Place a hanfull of minnows in a sealable sandwich plastic bag. Sprinkle couple tablespoons of salt in the bag, shake it up and seal the bag. Make up up several bags and put them in another larger sea;ble bag and freeze them in your freezer. The salt may kill the VHS stuff but it may not.

When taking them from the freezer keep them in a cooler with ice, like a six pack cooler is fine. The ice will keep them shiny and firm till you need them. They will last an hour or so before turning soft and mushy after taking them out of the iced cooler bag.

With the high price of bait now and the need for bait especially in late summer when availability of fresh live minnows are hard to come you will have a chance at the deepwater perch schools.

Use the minnows in waters where they came from due to bait transportation rules outlined in the DEC Regulations.
