furuno 585 or lowrance hds 8

Recommended Posts

The Furano 585 is now 7 year old technology. Electronics change immensely over a few years, The new technology kicks butt against the old technology.

Spoondraggin

The new Furuno technology is now in the model 587. Same unit but on steroids and the price is the same if you do a little shopping. Go to Furuno's web site and check it out.

To me both are great units but...... I know im going to get crushed for this ..... do you really need a $1300-$1500 unit for open water Trout and Salmon fishing? IMO your down/speed unit is what you need to catch fish on Lake O! Sure everyone would love to have one of those expensive units but are they necessary? I have a Garmin unit that i payd like $600 the marks fish , puts down way points, has all the gps you could want, the only thing i wish it had was a bigger screen because the 5in is hard to see when im in the back of the boat. Again this is ONLY my opinion and am not Knocking anyone for what they use given if i had they $$ I would probably run one of the more expensive ones to just to say i had one. ok now i will take my beating! ;)

Thanks Matt

No beating Matt. We all have our limits and can justify just about anything. Our wifes can attest to that  .

Spoon asked about the 585 so that's the info he is getting. Not sure whats happening with the Lowrance units. :wondering:

I use the 620 because of space limits. It's a good unit, and so are a lot of others out there.

You are probably right, but we all need our toys. It's exciting to see your rigger cables and your torpedoes on a colorful screen. To actually see what's happening below your boat is a great kick.

Now,do we catch more because of it? Maybe.

I've seen both FF you are looking for in action, and liked the Furuno much better so, after doing all the research you are probably doin, we went with the 587. Hardest part is picking the transducer. The difference between the 585 and 587 is bottom discrimination, which also calls for a different, little more expensive transducer.

We picked up a transom mount that is HUGE (http://www.airmartechnology.com/2009/pr ... anf=Furuno). Didn't realize it was as big and heavy as it was until we had it in person. It's like the size of a Gatorade bottle.

Hope th is helps.
