Thompson Stringer Question

I am looking at a 1990 Thompson Fisherman 24 Hardtop.......only remaining question is the stringers and if they are solid. I cannot 'see' them at all. Is there any way to check them out w/o a complete boat survey done?

You can see them in the motor well, and some portion in the anchor locker/ well under the hardtop by the Capts chair.

My advice is to get it surveyed. Worth the money. Especially a thompson which are known to have stringer issues.

I agree, I love mine, I think it's just about the best fishing platform in that size boat out there, but Thompson DID have some build quality issues, a survey is money well spent.

You're talking about a boat that is almost 24 years old........... ANY boat can and will have issues if it wasn't taken care of or maintained properly.

 

Get a survey or factor in the cost of repairs into your offer price

I replaced the stringers in my 86, 25ft Thompson 2 years ago. I did 100% of the work and was still near $1000 by the time I was ready to hit the water...

Thompsons are notorious for having stringers go bad.  For most of the 80's and into the 90's, they were a company that was struggling financially so some corners were cut.

I have an '89 Thompson....stringer are great, however, had to get transom redone.   As Tim B said above, this is a great fishing platform.

How much does it cost for a boat survey?

I believe I paid 500 bucks for my survey. Worth every penny. If the surveyor finds some minor issues you can negotiate that from the price of the repairs towards the boat. When I received my survey, I told the owner to either fix and I will pay asking price or I will fix and take it off the asking price.

Spend the $.  I did not and put thousands into stringers and a transom.
