Olcott Pen Project - Put In

Recommended Posts

One of the annual “Rites of Spring†for the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) is the Olcott Pen Rearing Project. Now in it’s 10th year of existence, this project has successfully reared over 560,000 Chinook Salmon and Steelhead Trout. These Salmon & Trout are major contributors to the excellent year around Fishery enjoyed by anglers fishing from the Lake Ontario Ports and Tributary Streams in Niagara County. At the recent “State of the Lake†meeting in Lockport, the DEC reported from their first year of data from their Salmon study, Pen Reared Salmon survive 70% better than the Salmon they direct stock into our tributary streams. The DEC also reported that Anglers have experienced 11 consecutive years of excellent Chinook salmon fishing.

The LOTSA team working on the pen project will be prepping the Pens that hold the fish and putting them in the water on Saturday April 5th beginning at 830 am at the Town of Newfane Marina. Once the Fish arrive, they will need to be fed 5 times a day (7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm) for at least 3 weeks. The Fish are then released, pens removed from the water, nets cleaned and everything put away for next year. Anyone who would like to help with any of these tasks can show up at the Marina on April 5th (bring your side cutters) or signup to feed at the LOTSA web site (www.lotsa.org).

Thanks,

Tim
