Smelt Dipping

Recommended Posts

Have I missed the Smelt run at Art Park in Lewiston.  Wanted to get the boys up there for a new experience.

I asked the same question..The river is still around 34 degrees. They usually start when it gets to somewhere close to 42..It's gonna be a little bit

sounds like they might pull the boom first week of may i bet that will messed up the smelters when the ice james the shoreline. Hope not for you die hards. I did it once last year first time and it was enough for me. i think my back still hurts. :)

Water temps not time trigger the run.  Definitely a few weeks away still from that.

They are running right now in our ponds in Maine! We dipped limits on Tuesday evening. Beautiful sewing size 4 to 5 inch! Our landlocks are very near the surface after ice out.

Sewn smelt is the bait of choice over here! We only fish something else if we can't get smelt.

So any update on the Smelt Run - Has it started - ?  How long does it last?  It has probably been 20 years since I went smelting last back in high school, would love to take my kids to do it ...

Niagara river is in full run. Lakers near the bar are stuffed full of smelt. Cold river water still is making a mess of the bar. Fishing does not match the reports from east. Temps are still hovering around 38 degrees.

I've heard the smelt are pretty thick in the lower river now.
