My son and I were trying to figure that out ourselves! Fish from black creek/ the Genesee river always have weird color to them but I'm not sure what those spots are.

Nice-  I believe the black spots are flukes (parasites) in their larval or cyst form.  I have seen these quite a bit on smallmouths in the past.  I think the flukes can only reach adulthood if the infected fish is consumed by a bird....but don't quote me on that. I am no biologist, just a fish nerd

pikefreak.....JOE ESOX is right.I always wondered about that on fish and your question made me google up the question. Here's two links to some good info on those harmless spots.....Think your life is complicated? Check out what those things do to get over..... :(   :P .......
