COPPER AND LEADCORE SPOOLING INSTRUCTIONS

STEP BY STEP COPPER SPOOLING INSTRUCTIONS

BACKER COPPER LEADER

-put a wrap of electrical tape around entire reel spool (helps prevent backing from slipping on spool)

-attach backer to spool with an arbor knot

-spool on desired amount of backing

-tie on Spro #3 heavy swivel for backer to copper connection

-Palomar knot for braid to swivel connection

-if using braid as backer, burn and melt tag end to create a ball. This will protect against knot slippage

-haywire twist for copper to swivel connection

-3/4-1" of shrink tube (1/8") to cover haywire twist

-spool on desired length of copper

-tie on Spro #3 heavy swivel for copper to leader connection

-haywire twist for copper to swivel connection

-1" of shrink tube to cover haywire twist

-Palomar knot for leader to swivel connection

-spool on desired length of leader

-attached swivel to business end with Palomar knot

SOME COPPER RIGGING NOTES:

-braid is the ideal choice for copper backing due to its low stretch and small diameter

-an Albright knot may be used for all line to line connections in place of swivel

-line to line connections= Spro #3 heavy swivel-150# inline swivel

-line to lure connections= Spro ball bearing swivel with coastlock snap

-Haywire twist for all copper to swivel connections

-copper can be spliced by using a back to back haywire twist

-shrink tubing offer great protection to copper haywire twist knots as they ride through rod guides

-Palomar knot for all backing or leader line to swivel connections

-copper leader loop knot may also be used for attaching the leader to copper

(Make a loop in the copper around a small nail and tightly twist the copper, just as you would with a haywire twist. Attach 1" piece of shrink tubing over haywire twist. Attach leader directly to copper loop.)

-preferred copper leaders= 35' of 30# fluorocarbon for flashers or paddles

-preferred copper leaders= 55' of 20# fluorocarbon for spoons or plugs

STEP BY STEP LEADCORE SPOOLING INSTRUCTIONS

BACKER LEADCORE LEADER

-put a wrap of electrical tape around entire reel spool (helps prevent backing from slipping on spool)

-attach backer to spool with an arbor knot

-spool on desired amount of backing

-Willis knot for backer to leacore connection

-spool on desired length of leadcore

-Willis knot for leadcore to leader connection

-Palomar knot for leader to swivel connection

-spool on desired length of leader

-attached swivel to business end with Palomar knot

SOME LEADCORE RIGGING NOTES:

-heavy mono may be used as backing

-braid is the ideal choice for leadcore backing due to its low stretch and small diameter

-Willis knot or a double Willis knot is preferred for all leadcore to line connections

-an Albright knot may be used for all line to line connections

-line to lure connections= ball bearing swivel with coastlock snap

-Palomar knot for all backing or leader line to swivel connections

-preferred leadcore leaders= 35' of 30# fluorocarbon for flashers or paddles

-preferred leadcore leaders= 35' of 20# fluorocarbon for spoons and plugs

I would add a few items.  On the tag end of a braid knot, tie long so you can do an overhand knot in the tag, then burn the end.  For micro lead, you will not be able to do a willis knot because of the small diameter.  The sheath is spectra so just remove lead (similar to willis knot) and just use the sheath to tie a double wrapped improved cinch to what ever you are tying to (braid backer {double wrap this also}or mono/fluoro leader).   When I used to splice copper I used to use a haywire twist and cover with 2 minute epoxy.
