16LB Brown/lake troll-1/9/16

Recommended Posts

Ended up hitting the water with my faithful crew for some more brownie action before this weather locks us down.

Stiff south wind and a much cooler water temp slowed the bite however the big bucks were out on the prowl.

Fished the 25-40 fow range. The lines off the boards were 150 back, riggers were 70 back n 14 down. Ended the day with a good tally around 20 and all were released for another day.

Arsenal used for the day.

Awesome fish!  Great report.  I just swapped out the two 55's on my whaler for a set of twin two stroke 70's, same vintage as the one you're running on your boat.  I've been wondering how they're going to do at long periods of idling for trolling.  Does yours idle right down for hours without fouling plugs?

Hey bearcat, yes the engine will idle down and troll nice for hours. A couple things I do to help is run nothing but non-ethonal gas, use the evinrude/johnson oil only, also I unplug the gas line at the end of the day and run all the gas out of the engine. You should like them I have a friend who had one on a previous boat and he put an insane amount of hours on it trolling.

Good luck.

That's great news.  Do you still have the oil injection hooked up?  I plan on disconnecting it on mine because I've heard that the oil pumps become unreliable when they get old.  I've also heard that the fuel economy of these 70's isn't too bad for two strokes.  I'm hoping a 30 gallon tank is enough to run two of them for a full day of fishing.  I cant wait to get back out.  Thanks for the info!

Mine did not have the oil pump hooked up so I've always done the gas oil mix with a 50:1 ratio. Fuel economy has been great with the outboard and it sounds like your tank should give you plenty of range. Good luck with the new engines and when you do get a splash down with them let me know how things work and if you have any questions.

Tight lines 😄

Eli
