Are the throttle controls on a kicker universal?

I have a 9.9 kicker with the boat I bought. It's underpowered for the size of the boat on a windy or slightly choppy day. I would like to upgrade to a 15 or 20hp when I see the right deal present itself but was wondering if I would have to get a new throttle and cabling to go with the new make and model. For example it's a Yamaha, can I use what's mounted inside the cabin for a Merc or Honda kicker?

Why not go with one of those control king setups? Then you have yourself a turn knob and only wires to deal with instead of cables. I am betting they are also cheaper than another control box.

I had this same problem with my 15hp Merc I also had the a TrollMaster and with heavy wind I needed the guys in the boat to move to the side...... I put a sailboat style prop on and it worked much better BUT gas usage went way up...... I have a Yamma 9.9 Hi Thrust now on a bigger boat great gas usage and  it handles well..... not 100% on subject for you but hope it helps some.
