Close Call, Rotten Transom

Recommended Posts

Late this winter I found out the transom on my boat was totally rotten :swear: . A catastrophic boat failure was not too far in the future. I am posting the before and after pictures as a HUGE thank you to BW Customs Inc. Boat Repair 315-553-2495 Sodus,NY. Bill Whitcomb (owner) coached me on taking the old transom out then he did the install saving me a lot of money :cash: . There is no way this transom was this tough the day the boat rolled of the line from the factory! Bill did an amazing job and I cant wait to get this powered up and back on the lake 8) .

Holy cow Jeff! On the one hand sorry you had to go through it but on the other.....you have a brand new Grady out of it   I'll bet you'll feel one heck of a lot safer leaving Hughes from now on :)

What year is that boat?  I have a1992 Grady that has always been stored inside.  I sure hope it's better than that!  It seems  fine & strong.  How did you find your problem?  Yours looks great now good luck!

The outboard gradys from the 80's are the problem mainly due to the aluminum sill plate screwed and caulked on top of the transom.... scour the Internet and you will read many counts of the issue.

I did the transom in my islander I/o this winter for probably 5-600$ it was a lot of work but I know exactly what I have and other than a lot of time it really wasn't that difficult

any pics? I have a 96 islander. Still solid, just wondering how you finished it.

Thanks!

I have done a few transom's in my time but that takes the cake!! There was no evidence of a soft floor in the back? Well one thing with it being that decade it made it a lot easier to remove LOL, looks fantastic!!! And now you have a almost like new Grady White, there are one lean mean fishing machines! The Coast Guard uses that brand, that should tell you something. Good luck with it. Now you can open the carbs and your motor and it won't tear off the back of the boat. LOL, Pap

What do you want pictures of? I just painted it gray with oil based paint to seal the wood. Also I replaced all the transom hardware with new

you didnt remove the old transom? I saw my cousin replace the transom on small aluminum and don't want to imagine doing that to islander.
