Copper/Lead Core question

Recommended Posts

How much of the backing should you let out after all the Copper or Lead core is spooled out?  Should you let out approximately the same amount of backing as the Copper/Lead core is estimated to sink (ex: 300 copper @ 2.5mph = 55 feet) before clipping it to inline planer board?

For those who use Big Boards: Enough so that the knot between the core/copper and backer is submerged under water. That lead length will vary depending on where it is on the planer tow line. Longer leads the closer to the boat due to tow line elevation.

I'll run leadcore & copper about 20-30 feet back usually.  I have a splice of mono before my braid backing.  For copper this seems to soften the blow on an initial hard hit putting less stress/shock on your knots.

I'll also experiment a bit with leadcore.  Shorter cores with mono backing (5 color or shorter) I'll sometimes let back 100-200 feet more before the planer board when I'm targeting fish in the top 25 fow.
