Can't beat a Whaler. That boat can handle anything you can throw at her. Back in the 80's I was on the Whaler tournament team. We fished 100 plus miles offshore in really crappy conditions all the time

Wasn't pleasant but I always felt safe.

That boat has a 5000 lb swamped capacity. That means pull the drain plugs and put a F150 on it and you won't sink it. Total tank.

Thanks for the kind words. Actually though, the swamped capacity (or with the drain plugs removed) of the Whaler 27 is 10,000 lbs or a couple F150s and your fishing gear.

Good grief John that's pick'in up and laying them down @40 mph, with 450 ponies pushing her!! For a 27fter that's damn good. The older Boston Whaler's and the early 80's-mid 90's the Grady Whites where my favorite looking boats of there times. Best of luck with your sale!! Someone will be a proud owner of a magnificent looking and handling vessel. A lot of time and patience went into this beauty.

You sure can tell you've taken very good care of your "baby" too John. I cherish my 18 Ventura and have never had a nervous moment in her on Lake O. Whalers are second to none in the boat department and yours is a wonderful specimen. Best of luck with the sale. I would imagine once someone gets a look at the price of a new one at the shows they will be VERY interested :)

Thanks, McCauley canvas in Medina did that. Captain Navy Sunbrella, custom 5 section rear panel setup so you can have longer sides in cold weather and shorter sides in warmer weather. There are also exterior hand rails so you can hold onto something if you need to go forward walking on the gunwale.

John was your Whaler always powered by outboards? Or did you repower her using that bracket for the outboards? This is just a pipe dream for me at this point,  but if I decide to redo the floors and find out I need to go further. Then I'll go all the way. What a pleasure it would be to rid the doghouse. With the new outboards today I really believe it's the way to fly. There's no way in hell a single V8 could move your vessel like those Evenrude motors do. Hell you'd need a Keith Black hemi with a 671 blower and 2 fours to keep up with that thirsty horse making impossible to fund the fuel bill. :o  Between the new ponies and that dashboard it's one hell of beautiful ride!!

Unlike many other boats you don't have to worry about transom or floor rot and it is not "accidental" that various military outfits, Coast Guard, police, fire and rescue boats are Whalers. Injected foam impervious to water inside them....like being in a cooler... incredible floatation... no noise walking around inside them as in many other boats  After owning two of them now I'd never have another type boat. At 200 lbs I can stand on the gunwhale of my 18 footer and it doesn't move or tip. People can walk around in it and it is like being in your living room as far as stability so I can't even imagine what this 27 footer is like. Safest boat in the world. Modified versions were used to patrol in Viet Nam and were shot up without sinking. Thye aren't your average boat.....kinda like a Jaguar in the auto world Guess I kinda like them huh?

You have all the right in the world Les!! I don't want to this thread to get clogged up with just yick-yack. Those boats are awesome and the have character, like the older cars.

Factory original outboard bracket known as Whaler Drive. It extends the wet bottom of the hull about 2'4", allows for higher engine height installation improving performance, and at rest or troll the bracket's buoyancy supports the weight of the Engines. Consumer Rated for 600 hp. (2x300hp was the max they imagined back in the day). I heard of a coast guard 27 running 2x350 Yamaha.

I set rpm at about 900 or so and use bags. I don't fish much above 2.5-2.7 and am usually around 2.2. I have small, mid and large size bags for different wind and wave conditions. I prefer to adjust bag size rather than play with throttles when it's windy and I change directions. You might need 1000-1100 to burn spoons at 3.5. The props are 4 blade SS so there's a lot of thrust and pretty responsive steering at slow speeds.

At slow trolling speeds outboard boats with set back brackets steer better going forward than the same boat with transom mounted outboards. The reverse is true backing up however, so maneuvering responsiveness docking backwards is a bit slower to respond.
