Crappie Fishing the St.Lawrence

Many of the marinas and bays have crappies that move in as the water warms and bait moves in. Try fishing around docks, overhanging or downed trees or other cover in bays or up tribs. Minnows and a float are a traditional method. After this early bite, which may begin before ice out, they move in to spawn in similar areas. This is generally in May.

Thanks for your replies. I'm just not seeing people in boats or on docks fishing for crappie like you see on the lakes in western New York like Chautauqua, Seneca or Honeoye.  I always found that to be strange. Crappie fishing is great fun in the spring especially for kids. I'm going to spend some time looking this year.

There are some hard core crappie fisherman up here. They can be caught in the river but many of the Indian River Lakes also have good populations. Timing is everything. When your timing is right and they move into shallow water they are pretty easy to target.
