Riggers

Recommended Posts

For lake trout I run them within 3 or 4 feet of bottom. For salmon I put them anywhere from 40 to 120 feet down depending on where my fish finder says fish are. Some guys drop down farther than that but my riggers are manual so I'd rather not pull at 10 pound weight up from more than 120 feet down lol

drop my weights down to 5 to 10 ft. off the bottom sometimes. hit bottom many times in the finger lakes but never got hung up. just pay attention when you are running them close to the bottom. the downrigger will bounce like crazy when you hit.

Bouncing bottom is a very effective way to draw fish in, but it is definitely an art. You really have to hover over that rigger to be prepared for making depth adjustments. It helps if you have a locator on the rail somewhere so you can watch your depth and still be close to your bottom rigger.

A lot of times when resetting, I will drop my weight right to the bottom until it hits and let the blowback lift the ball up off the bottom. I have footage of Lakers charging in to take a look as soon as the ball hits. I also have lots of footage of bouncing off big and small boulders and coming out unscathed. I don't recommend doing this and I'm sure it will bite me in the ass someday...
