Handlining Walleyes

I am interested in buying a couple of handline reels just wondering if it is legal in nys. I was told that it is illegal here, I know it is big in the Detriot River and Minn. lakes and rivers. Thanks thought about calling dec but not sure if they would understand this type of fishing.

You just have to abide by the amount of legal hook points per line. You would be best served to hook up with a tackle store on the Detroit River. I saw an under water video of how many untouched walleyes live below the Peace Bridge on upper Niagara. Would be tailor made for s chugging iron and pencil plugs

I think as long as you stick to the hook point restictions per line you are ok. I have a friend from Ottawa that picked a couple up last year after fishing with me and uses them successfully on the river. They use Victrola rigs, etc. on the Finger Lakes so don't see any issues. Different than jug fishing and trot lines which I don't believe are legal.

I have watched some videos on it in the Midwest. It works very well.

Sort of similar to the Seth Green rig.

However I think a rod/reel makes it easier to deal with the fast depth changes.
