new out of the box , mine never shows surface speed/boat speed. Am I doing something wrong?

check your transducer. and make sure the wheel is still there on the transducer. Then make sure the connection is snug on the back. Usually surface speeds on of the first things to come up. I've had wheels on the transducer randomly come apart and I've heard the connectors have to be snug tight.

Is the wheel I'm a location it can spin? Aka below transom?

Yes it spins it has never shone anything on the screen no dashes or anything..

Call fish hawk they have great customer service and if in warranty they'll ship right away

Ok I called fish hawk and the first x4d that came out did not show surface speed even though the transducer has the paddle wheel. Thanks anyway
