Oswego County Fishing Report for October 23, 2017

This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Lake Ontario report:

The lake fishing report is over for the season.

Oswego River report:

The water flow fluctuated a bit over the weekend between 14,000 and 700cfs. This morning it is flowing at 1240cfs. Temperatures were well above average over the weekend with a change in the weather pattern moving in overnight with rain and cooler temperatures. Anglers are still finding a few salmon with a number of steelhead moving up through the river. Floating skein, smack beads, egg sacs or throwing stickbaits are working. The area creeks are active with a number of fish.

Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, view the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely Brochure below.

Salmon River report:

According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:

On Saturday some kings were taken but steelhead were the story. Yesterday most guests reported the fishing to be fair to good with several hookups and a few fish brought to hand. The catch was primarily steelhead with a couple kings and cohos in the mix. This morning the River Patrol reported a few steelhead landed in the upper section plus a king salmon. A “slow push” of fish was noted moving through. The lower section reported a “fair amount” of fish pushing into the run – a mix of steelhead and king salmon. The water flow remains at 335cfs with the water temperature 55 degrees.

Oneida Lake report:

The cooler temperatures we had for a few days have turned back to warmer temperatures the last few days. These will hold on through Monday and temperatures will begin to drop through the week. Anglers should find a decent walleye bite at this point. Casting stickbaits from shore just before and after dark is a good application at this time of year. Look for perch in about 10-15 feet of water using minnows. Surface activity may indicate smallmouth bass that are feeding on gizzard shad.

Sandy Pond report:

There is very little activity to report at this time.
