Make sure there's a fresh battery in the probe and that you have power to the head unit. Ours starts to read once it's a foot or so down. Also, make sure that the probe stays dry in storage. Once, we had it stored somewhere that it got submerged from rain, and that ran the battery down to nothing inside of a week.

Good advice from Gator.  Get a free multi voltmeter from Harbor Freight and eliminate any guess work about battery or source voltage.

Verify that the head unit has power and is working. When hooked into your 12 volt supply, you should see a small black dot or decimal point in the lower digital screen which would show the temp if a working probe were attached. No "dot" means no power or a bad head unit. If the head is working , follow the advice above to check out the probe..
