Question about wire..

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of Penn Squall 30 reels that I ran long lines off the back with lead and copper last year.

I would like to run wire from these reels for my large dipseys. However these reels do not have a line counter.

I have never run my dipseys without a line counting reel.

Is this an issue? Are there ways/tricks to determine depth?

Thanks

In the past I tried a couple of the Berkeley clip on counters and I ended up throwing them out in the trash. The line/wire kept popping out of the counter.  In the old days before counters I used to use different colored yarn.. just a given colored knot tied at intervals (e.g. 25 ft) and then super glued to the wire. They last a while at least and give a "guesstimate" where your at. I also tried spray painting at intervals and it works for a while but wears off. Here is another possibility (bt may not be real flea resistant)

With the torpedo 7 strand wire, you can untwist the wire every so many feet, slip a colored strand of yarn in and twist the line back into shape again. It is precise and will not move

The Berkly line counters are are very precise. They work well for powerpro braids. But you must use them to let the line out to the desired length and then take them off the rod or they will just be in the way.

I have had 4 okuma line counter reels for 9 years now and they still work fine after all the abuse from salmon and steel

The drags are decent and the line counters work as good as my Diawa and Shimano reels

here is a link that has them for $64.00 each

Hope thy are making these better these days. Used them years ago and the clickers fell off after a few uses.
