Trolling Flies

I was sitting at the kitchen table tonight tying trolling fly harnesses and I was curious how you guys rig yours? I tie all my own up and I typically use 50Lb Ande mono and red VMC vanadium hooks:

Last night I tied some up using some 55lb Seaguar Fluorocarbon that we got at a tournament somewhere along the line. It wasn't as stiff as the Ande but it was easier to snell. If you tie your own, what line & hooks do you use?

I tie my own tourny ties with 40lb big game and translucent faceted beads

Tournament ties all the way! Personally I have seen improved hook ups since I started using them.

I may be the oddball here but I don't get the hits on the tournment ties like I do with straight trebles. I use owner hooks and tripple fish 50lb flouro. I don't seem to loose may fish.

50 lb seaguar fluorocarbon with an Offset Gamakatsu Octopus Circle to two or three beads to a Owner 4X Treble Hook. Been getting much better hook ups since going to this rig.

Tandem Gamakatsu 4/0 octopus hooks on 50 lb Big Game for me.

I use the same set-up/gear as Fishman08. Once I went Tourny Tie, I've never gone back!!! Hook-ups went way up and fish lost went to virtually zero once I switched. In the 4 years I have been running them, I have only had one bite-off too.

Started tying my own tourney ties a few years ago. Much better ratios now. 50# Ande clear MONO, 4/0 gammy octopus and gammy EWG with a drop of epoxy at the bottom intersect of the treble, per Ernie L's advice. I have noticed that the EWG's tend to bend up a bit after a catch. Maybe from the king but probably from the pliers. I just bend them back, check my leader and back in they go.

Tie mine w/ st-41 1/0 owner treble. It works just as well as when I used to use the "tournament tie".

Try this out `rock. This is how I got started. I never tried to figure out what the difference was between buying vs making flies. For me, makeing my own flies adds a little more satifaction to the fishing experience.

I started tying my own flies about 4 years ago. While I believe that in the long run it may save you some money, in the short term

it doesnt. Its fun to do and you will get some satifaction out of catching fish on your "product".

I can agree with you Rob, If I figure up the cost of material per fly, it is def. cheaper. If I add up all the cost

of the extra mylar I have, it might be cheaper to just buy what I need to run. Regardless I will still continue to run

and make my own flys. Its a great project for the winter months. For cost savings I have learned to

be a little less creative and stick with stocking up on the proven patterns I already have.

I enjoy making my own fly harnesses. I know I'd really enjoy making the flys to, but I'm resisting that temptation. I think I have enough hobbies.

I tie up 50 rigs over winter, and that lasts me the season. I am adding some glow gel beads to the treble on a couple this year to see how they work.

I may add a bead of glue yet to the center. Hopefully they wont scare the fish away

Rod, Ive been doing something similar for years, cut a piece of surgical tubing & slide it(over the eye) down the shank of the hook . It keeps the line from fouling in the gaps of the treeble hook. The nice thing is it does'nt change the weight of the hook so the action of the fly is still the same. The tubing I use is the same that you use for bobber stops.This is really effective on cut bait rigs with the long leaders. I havn't lost a fish to fouling since I started using this trick! the tubing comes in colors or clear. No glue needed!
