Wtb kicker: Tohatsu or Honda?

Recommended Posts

I have a 8 horse tohatsu the only problem I had is a fuel pump got week. I Would buy the motor again though. With the Socialist Party running the country I believe gas will be 5 6 bucks a gallon before Summer's over so as stated above either motor would work .

Yeah I bought a new stove took my money and was told it be 4 to 5 months before it was in .

If you can get either one right now, I'd buy whatever you can get.   Most of those smaller horsepower engines are all on straight backorder right now.

I've had the 9.8 Tohatsu since new in 2016 and it has been great. I have a friend though that had a Tohatsu either 8 or 9.8 on his aluminum boat and it had a vibration problem so he bought a Merc instead. The 8 and 9.8 are basically the same engine by the way. Most of these small 4 strokes are pretty good these days and like anything else there is never a guarantee each individual item will be 100 percent without problems for its lifetime no matter which one is selected. The Tohatsu tends be be less expensive. Mine is VERY economical on gas. Mine weighs about 90 lbs and is electric start tiller. The trim tilt model is substantially heavier and that is why I selected the one I have.

Don't know much about tohatsu but i have a 7.5 Honda 4 stroke from the 80s it saved my dad's butt a few times In the 90s and mine as recently as this year the thing has more hours than I care to know and still runs all day on a gallon of gas as far as kickers if I ever need another one and Honda's an option thats what I'd get it's 35 years old and still more reliable than most cars

I will remind you of this post by the end of summer. What will you call the party that won the elections if what you believe turns out to be wrong ?

Have used a Tohatsu 8hp for the last two years with zero issues.  Pushes my 19 foot Deep-V nicely and sips gas. Bought it from online outboards.com. Was shipped in a few days and I went and picked it up at the FedEx terminal.  Would do it again without hesitation.

I’ve been running a Honda 9.9 since 2014. Just did water pump this offseason. Was surprised how easy it was to replace. 5 bolts and backoff the nut connecting the shift shaft and it’s off. Honda gets my vote for easy maintenance and 1-2 pull starts every time. No experience with the other brand.

I bought a new hi thrust Honda 9.9, 4-stroke, long shaft, with tilt and e-start last year. Love it. Saved my butt on the water when the new-to-me I/O decided to not play well with others. Quick easy start and smooth running.

That said, I have heard that both are solid engines.

FYI, I had purchased New in 2000 a Nissan 9.9 4 stroke motor. I estimate I have at minimum 3000 hours on this motor. It runs like new till this day.Nissan is now Tokatsu. Both motor choices would be good, just one thing I learned from the company rep in California who suggested to me to NOT plum the gas from main engine tank and always use a separate fuel source. Followed this advice and have been greatly rewarded with an engine that performs flawlessly to this day. Chang Oil every year along with gear oil, new filter as well. Spark plugs every 2 years. This Nissan get 12 hours of trolling walleyes on 3 gallons of gas. Get about 9 hrs for salmon. I will not hesitate to buy another one if ever needed.

Why not yamaha?  I brought a brand new yamaha T9.9 long shaft electric start in 2015 and its been great. Keeps batteries charges while trolling and starts at the push of a button every time.  Plus many yamaha mechanics around Lake O and NY in general.  Not a bad price either.

I like Yamaha, but they really screwed there customers in 04 when they neglected to inform Owners of a major problem with there Exhaust Tuners on the F225 motor. They burned a lot of bridges with existing customers. I know of one personally. 8K fix. Imagine if you were running twins. Got to stand by your product. You see a lot of rigs available this vintage year and have these same engines. If you consider buying one, do your homework.

Here’s another question for you gentleman I am interested in either of these motors but here’s the issue, If we need any work done to the motor or any replacement parts who or where do we go? There’s almost no one that works on engines anymore

I’ll be honest, when I had some needs for my Tohatsu and was asked where I bought it, I got a 5 min lecture from a business up on Irondequoit who services them because it was from an online dealer. Needless to say I ended up at a marina by honeoye lake. If I’m not mistaken though any merc shop would work on them. Barrett’s in Geneva works on Mercs. Seagars in Canadaquia I think works on Honda’s. Not sure if this is your area or not.
