Depth without riggers

Recommended Posts

Dipsy Divers = Excitement! I believe a #1 dipsey with the O-ring on a 3 setting is like a 3:1 ratio, so say 195' back should put you in that range. Assuming you are using wire that is.

The center of a good woodshop is a table saw

The center of a trolling rig , especially for rookies , are down riggers .

They are easy to use and there is no guesswork for depth .

There is a learning curve with divers etc. They work great . But first time , especially when the fish are deeper you will be guessing at depths .

A set of manuals can be had pretty reasonable on here .

Measure twice & cut once or it'll get expensive quickly.

Tie good knots & check you lines regularly or it'll get expensive quickly.

Lots of good advice here!

So here is what should happen....

Get a couple dipsy set ups going, one with a green pro troll and T107 Atomic Fly

one with a double glow white protroll and mag moonshine spoon

go fishing

your going to get one, mid teens

then you will.....

buy a huge boat

have every electronic thing you can find

two nets

about 20 rods

every spoon and every fly ever made

Good luck trying to break the addiction after that first dipsy strike

All great advice from great fishermen!

I would also advocate for a 1# thumper rig down the shoot (center). From rod to reel and  20# wire the set up can be <$135 total.

Good luck!

Thanks all, very sound advice. Any loan officers here, gonna need it !! Seriously, like to thank all for the advice, well taken and arsenal is growing.

you can get a pair of mauals for next to nothing (pm me) . Installing them is going to be a bigger deal than buying them AND don;t forget the expense and time of installing diver rod holders- you will want diver s and holders but theres more to it than just the rod, reel n wire

Don't forget that the depth on the rigger gauge is not real depth when trolling. Angle of the cable makes a significant change in depth. True or very close depth is : cable out x cosign of estimated angle. There are charts available, google it, or do the math and make your own.
