Wave reports

I was wondering which wave report is typically more accurate, Weather underground or NOAA? Are there any other websites that are better for Lake O?

I feel the best wave report is to be standing at the boat ramp looking out.I come from MANY miles away to find that the report was calling for waves 1 foot or less to 3 to 5 footer out on the lake. Call up the local Tackle shops and see what they say.Also the weather reports have a 50/50 chance of being right. This is just my 25+ years of coming to Lake O talking But if I had to choose it would be this one for inshore

I don't know where you fish or how far in advance you are planning a trip but wave forcast's can be very frustrating. I don't think you can look more than a day or two in advance with accuracy.

I live 45 min. from the lake and what I do is monitor the central lake ontario Buoy. I fish out of the Oak so by observing the wave hieght at the bouy and the wind direction I can pretty much tell if it is worth going or not. You can look at the history and see if the wind and waves are building or not. You can see if the wind changed direction. As you get used to the kind of forcast that will bring good or bad conditions you kind of get the hang of it.

The bouy is not in service for the year yet but should be up an running soon This is the link to get to it.

Try this one. Scroll down & click on the different choices. IE wind speed, temp etc. Hit arrows to advance 3, 6, 9 hours etc.

Central lake buoys are out in middle of lake & really don't help the near shore guy other than for approaching patterns. (however the barometer is a great feature)

Depends to as to where you are planning on fishing. The Oak could be relatively calm and it could be a bit worse down east a ways.

I agree with Erwin, trying to plan a trip around the reports is useless. They are inaccurate most of the time.

I plan on fishing out of Oswego, Mexico, or Pulaski. I'm planning on trailering and live near the Turning Stone. I realize and have experienced that the forecasts are pretty unreliable and make it tough to plan the trip. I'll try those websites and pay attention to the winds also.

my brother just told me one of our local tv station news channels has a live feed from a camera on the charlotte side of the peer. Any one know wich channel news has this?

I would go west. Wilson /Olcott area in the spring. I fished the Oswego area for years in the spring...to many blow offf days.

I fish Mexico Bay, Nine Mile & Oswego areas. I have the advantage of being able to look out my front window to see what the lake is doing, but, I agree that those forecasts aren't always accurate. I was up 2 weekends ago to open the house for the season, and, while Saturday's forecast was right on, Sunday's was nowhere close to being accurate. Nearshore was calling for light winds of 5mph or less with waves under 1 foot. Hmmm, where did those 15mph winds and 2-3's come from?
