I had the same sound coming from my 140hp Omc 1980 engine even after setting the valve clearances.so I buttonholed a marine mechanic to listen.....he told me it's a flapper valve in the exaust to stop water from coming in when in reverse....at idle there's not enough exaust pressure to hold it open so it flaps(ticks)...once the rpms increase it holds the flapper open and the ticking stops......................................Handyman

Hey Hank, thanks for the responce...should have mentioned it's a 22ft. Aluminum boat, don't know if that makes any difference.....when installing a new boot what's best for a sealant.....silicone or marine sealant?............Craig

My boot on my OMC out drive (400 series) is about 7 years old now, has the muskrat guard on it, still looks new and is still flexible. Boat is trailered most of the time, spends mabee 4 weeks in marinas during different derbys, and is completely covered for winter but not heated storage. How long can I go (safley) before replacing it. Probabaly a couple horror stories would be good for me,

Try calling Angling Outfitters (519-539-5494) largest Lowrance dealer in Canada, ask for Joycelyn, this guy really knows his stuff.
